Jim Carrey in talks to return for 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' sequel; Ron Howard to direct

Jim Carrey will soon return to screens for another ‘Grinchmas’!According to the latest reports, the actor is reportedly gearing up to revisit his iconic role as The Grinch in an upcoming live-action film.

Jim Carrey to return as The Grinch

Over 25 years after winning hearts with ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’, Carrey is reportedly in talks with Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment to develop a sequel to the beloved 2000 film. Besides the actor, Ron Howard, who directed the original live-action film, is also expected to return to helm the sequel and will produce alongside his longtime Imagine Entertainment partner, Brian Grazer, states a report on The Hollywood Reporter. The untitled project will reportedly have a screenplay from comedy writers Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel. The trio previously collaborated on the 2003 Dr. Seuss adaptation ‘The Cat in the Hat’, starring Mike Myers. Plot details for the sequel remain under wraps, and no release date has been announced.

About ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’

Released just ahead of Thanksgiving in 2000, ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ proved to be a major box office hit, raking in over USD 260 million domestically. The film went on to become the highest-grossing movie in North America that year, and collected USD 345 million worldwide. It also won the Academy Award for Best Makeup. Beyond its theatrical run, the film, according to Nielsen streaming data, ranked among the top 10 most-streamed holiday movies in each of the past five years. Last year, Carrey’s live-action version even outperformed the 2018 animated adaptation, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, on streaming charts.

Jim Carrey on playing The Grinch

It remains to be seen if Carrey will sign the dotted line. The actor previously shared his experience shooting for the film and the gruelling make-up routine that made him want to quit the project. More recently, however, he has suggested that advances in motion-capture technology could provide a less taxing way to bring the character to life.

Jim Carrey ‘clone’ conspiracy

Most recently, Carrey’s different appearance sparked a frenzy online, with the internet starting a ‘clone’ conspiracy. The claim that the actor was cloned surfaced after his rare public appearance at the 2026 Cesar Awards in Paris, where fans speculated about his noticeably different physical appearance and behaviour. Following the viral social media buzz, both Jim’s representatives and event organisers rubbished the reports and confirmed that it was the real Jim Carrey who attended and accepted the award.
