Parliament Statement: India Calls for Dialogue as West Asia Conflict Escalates, Jaishankar Tells Lok Sabha

In the Lok Sabha, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the House regarding the escalating conflict in West Asia and its implications for India. He stated that the Government of India had issued a statement on 28 February expressing deep concern over the situation and urging all sides to exercise restraint, avoid escalation, and prioritize the safety of civilians. India continues to believe that dialogue and diplomacy remain the best path to de-escalate tensions and address the underlying issues. He also emphasized the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states in the region. Jaishankar informed the House that the Cabinet Committee on Security met on 1 March under the chairmanship of Narendra Modi. The meeting reviewed the airstrikes in Iran and subsequent attacks in several Gulf countries. The committee discussed the safety of the Indian community in the region and assessed implications for regional stability, trade, and economic activity. The government was also briefed about difficulties faced by Indian travelers transiting through the region and by students appearing for examinations in India. Relevant ministries were directed to take necessary measures to assist them. Jaishankar noted that the conflict has intensified, spreading to other countries with rising casualties and destruction. Economic activities and daily life across the region have been severely disrupted. India reiterated its call on 3 March for diplomacy and an early end to the conflict. He highlighted that nearly 10 million Indian citizens live and work in Gulf countries, while several thousand Indians are in Iran for education and employment.
