As India prepares to face the Proteas, all eyes will be on Shubman Gill, who is on the verge of breaking a major record currently held by Babar Azam.
Shubman Gill has been in exceptional form in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–2027 cycle, scoring 946 runs in 13 innings from seven matches at an impressive average of 78.83. His tally includes five centuries and six fifties.
Gill needs just 54 more runs to become the first player to cross 1,000 runs in the current WTC cycle – surpassing KL Rahul, who has 728 runs in 13 innings.
In the overall history of the World Test Championship, England’s Joe Root leads the charts with 6,080 runs in 126 innings, the only player to cross 6,000. Among Asian batters, Babar Azam holds the record for most runs – 3,129 runs in 70 innings across 38 matches, with eight centuries and 19 fifties.
However, Shubman Gill isn’t far behind. The Indian batter has already scored 2,839 runs in 72 innings across 39 Tests, averaging 43.01 with 10 centuries to his name.
With strong performances against South Africa, Shubman Gill could soon overtake Babar to become the highest-scoring Asian in WTC history.
