Why BIEAP Discontinued AP Inter First Year Exams? Everything You Need To Know - News18

The Board of Intermediate Education, Andhra Pradesh (BIE AP) has announced today that first-year public examinations for Intermediate students will be scrapped starting from the upcoming academic year.  This decision is meant to bring the state in line with other boards, such as CBSE and other state boards, which do not have board exams for Class 11. The proposal comes after considering suggestions and recommendations from students, parents, educators, and other stakeholders.

The primary reason for this decision is to reduce academic stress on students and align the curriculum with national standards.

“Except Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, no other prominent state is conducting board exams for Inter 1 year," the statement issued in this regard said.

It also mentioned that most colleges and universities consider only Class 12 board exams as the qualifying criteria for admissions, and the results of Inter first-year exams are not taken into account.

For the first year, individual junior colleges will be responsible for internal assessments and evaluations. The Board will still conduct the public examinations for second-year Intermediate students. The government has also invited feedback and suggestions on these reforms, with a deadline of January 26.

According to BIE AP, the current Intermediate Education syllabus has not been updated in recent years, which has led to the need for revisions. To address this, 14 committees have been formed to revise the syllabus and textbooks.

The board has highlighted the need to introduce NCERT textbooks for smooth educational progress, starting from the academic year 2025-26 for first-year Intermediate students.

The revised syllabus will align with NEET and JEE standards, following NCERT guidelines.

Science Subjects (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology): NCERT textbooks will be introduced for first-year students in 2025-26. The syllabus will be reduced accordingly, and fully revised NCERT textbooks will be implemented for second-year students in 2026-27.

Arts & Humanities (Civics, Economics, History, Commerce): Textbooks designed as per the Board of Intermediate Education syllabus will be introduced for first-year students in 2025-26. The existing syllabus will continue for second-year students, with revised textbooks introduced in 2026-27.

Languages (English, Telugu, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu): Textbooks based on the BIE syllabus will be introduced for first-year students in 2025-26. The existing syllabus will continue for second-year students, with revised textbooks in 2026-27.

BIE AP has suggested changes in how marks will be allotted for exams. The new system will balance theory and internal or practical tests, similar to the CBSE pattern. This will encourage critical thinking and research skills among students.

For languages and humanities subjects, out of 100 marks, 80 marks will be for theory exams, and 20 marks will be for internal exams, project work, or research.

For the MPC (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry) group, 380 marks will be for theory exams, and 120 marks will be for internal or practical tests.
