UK Travel Reinvented With Mandatory ETA For Non-EU Nationals hoping for better security - Travel And Tour World
Significant changes are on the horizon for international travel to the UK and EU in 2025, with new digital travel authorisations set to streamline border processes and bolster security measures.
UK Introduces ETA for International Visitors
Beginning January 8, 2025, travelers from non-EU countries, including the United States, Canada, and Australia, must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before entering the UK, even for transit. The process involves a simple online application, costing £10 (around USD 12.75), with approvals typically issued within a few hours. Each ETA allows multiple entries for up to six months and remains valid for two years or until the passport expires. Additionally, starting April 2, 2025, EU citizens will also need an ETA to travel to the UK.
EU Rolls Out ETIAS and EES
The European Union is launching the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) in spring 2025. This requirement applies to visa-exempt travelers from 60 nations, including the UK, the US, Canada, and Australia. The online application costs €7 (about USD 7.40), and approvals may take up to 96 hours.
Simultaneously, the EU will introduce the Entry/Exit System (EES), which leverages biometric technology, such as facial recognition and fingerprints, to enhance border efficiency. The EES will monitor the entry and exit of non-EU visitors, reducing overstays and expediting crossings at EU borders.
These measures mark a transformative shift in travel protocols, aiming to deliver greater convenience and improved security for millions of international visitors.
These updates are designed to enhance travel efficiency, strengthen security protocols, and simplify entry procedures for visitors to both the UK and the EU.
