Bangladeshi national Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Rohilla Amin Fakir, alias Vijay Das (30), attempted to rob Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan’s home because he needed money for his ailing mother’s treatment. The accused had also lost a housekeeping job in December last year, leaving him without money, reports have claimed.

Shehzad chose Saif Ali Khan’s home because he was driven by extreme poverty, and wanted to steal the belongings of someone rich. He also planned to escape back to Bangladesh following the crime, a report with the Times Of India claimed.

“He chose Saif’s residence randomly. All he wanted was to steal from someone rich and escape to Bangladesh with the loot to help his ailing mother," the report quoted an officer as saying.

“The immediate provocation for the crime was that Shehzad lost a housekeeping job at a Thane restaurant on December 15 when its contract with the manpower agency owned by Jitendra Pandey ended. He found himself nearly penniless," the officer added.

Before joining the Thane restaurant in September last year, Shariful worked at a Worli restaurant, earning Rs 13,000 a month. He told police during interrogation that from this sum, he would send Rs 12,000 to Bangladesh for his mother’s medical treatment, keeping only Rs 1,000 for himself, the report claimed.

Shehzad was sacked from his job at the Worli restaurant after he was found in possession of a diamond ring belonging to one of the customers.

Shehzad told the police that he stabbed the actor in his back multiple times to free himself from his tight grip. Following the attack, he escaped from Khan’s flat, located in upscale Bandra, and hid in the garden of the building for around two hours.

Saif Ali Khan was attacked at his residence in the early hours of January 16, and the police arrested Shehzad from Thane on January 19.

Khan suffered multiple stab injuries in the attack and underwent an emergency surgery at the Lilavati Hospital. Doctors also removed a sharp object that was lodged in the actor’s spine.

Shehzad, a native of Jhalokathi district in Bangladesh, had been residing in Mumbai for over five months, working odd jobs and associated with a housekeeping agency.
