Renowned Indian playback singer P. Jayachandran, affectionately known as ‘Bhava Gayakan’ for his soulful and emotive singing, passed away on January 9, at the age of 80 in Thrissur, Kerala. Born on March 3, 1944, in Ernakulam, Jayachandran began his career with the song Manjalayil Mungithorthi in the 1966 Malayalam film Kalithozhan. Over nearly six decades, he recorded over 16,000 songs in multiple languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Hindi.

Some of his most iconic songs include “Rathiriyil Poothirukkum" (Thanga Magan), “Ayalathe Sundari" (Thacholi Marumakan Chandu), “Naale Naale Ente Naale" (Aadya Kiranangal), and “Suprabhatham" (Pancha Thanthram). His hauntingly beautiful “Nadha Nee Varum" from the Tamil movie Thalapathi and “Sangeethame" from Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal are still celebrated for their melody and depth.

He was a recipient of many accolades, including the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1986 for “Sivasankara Sarva Saranya Vibho". He also won multiple Kerala State Film Awards and Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. In 2020, he was honoured with the prestigious J. C. Daniel Award for his unparalleled contributions to Malayalam cinema and music.

Jayachandran’s death marks the end of an era in Indian playback singing, but his voice will continue to resonate in the hearts of music lovers worldwide.
