India vs England 2nd T20I LIVE SCORE: Mystery continues around Shami as IND look to seal series win
India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd T20I: England were Arshdeep Singh and Washington Sundar struck in the powerplay while Varun Chakravarthy dismissed Harry Brook once again as England continue to depend on captain Jos Buttler to provide the goods. Nitish Kumar Reddy has been ruled out for the rest of the series and Rinku Singh will be ruled out for the second and third matches. After a lop-sided contest in Kolkata, Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium hosts round 2 of the India vs England contests, hoping to offer a much more competitive game.
India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd T20I: Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson both fell to pace early
India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd T20I: It was a similar story for England in Chennai as it was in the first T20I in Kolkata but they did manage to get themselves to a more respectable score this time around. Six out of the seven Indian bowlers got a wicket as England were restricted to a score of 165/9. England's inability to pick the Indian spinners was in the forefront once again. Arshdeep Singh and Washington Sundar struck in the powerplay after which Varun Chakravarthy sent back Harry Brook once again. Brook had blamed the smog for his dismissal in the last T20I but he couldn't pick Chakravarthy in Chennai either despite the lack of smog in the city....Read More
Arshdeep dismissed Phil Salt in the first over once again and that brought England captain Jos Buttler early, as was the case in the first T20I. India have brought in Washington Sundar and Dhruv Jurel in place of Rinku Singh and Nitish Kumar Reddy, both of whom have sustained injuries. Mohammed Shami remains on the sidelines as Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and chose to bowl first in the second T20I.
India’s emphatic and clinical victory over England in the first T20I in Kolkata saw them take a comfortable 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The series now travels to Chennai, where the iconic Chepauk will host the second of the series, as India look to keep their incredible momentum in T20I cricket going and England look to bounce back.
England’s batting is dangerous and capable of hammering some huge scores, with six-hitters and boundary-getters littered throughout their lineup. However, it didn’t quite click for the visitors at the Eden Gardens: Arshdeep Singh tore through the top order with a probing opening spell, in particular dismissing the destructive Phil Salt early. Later, it was the spin magic of Varun Chakravarthy and the economical Axar Patel that put a stranglehold on the middle order, just completely outfoxing the big hitters in the middle overs.
For England, that will once again be the fear. Chennai provides a difficult batting surface that threatens to expose all the weaknesses in the England batting: a touch of movement with the new ball that could dislodge Salt and opening partner Ben Duckett, and plenty of slowness and spin on offer as has been typical for decades in Chennai. India’s spin triumvirate will be licking their lips at the prospect of targeting England’s vulnerable middle order: while Liam Livingstone is capable of hitting big sixes, he is just as capable of tying himself into a knot and being out early, not dissimilar to what happened in Kolkata.
For India, the concerns regarding selection lie more due to fitness of players than a tactical approach. Abhishek Sharma, who came good with a rapid and brutal half-century in the chase in the first match, is said to have rolled an ankle while in practice, which could jeopardise his spot for the upcoming match. With India not having chosen any recognised openers, this could mean that one of Tilak Varma or captain Suryakumar Yadav is promoted to open, which is not the ideal case scenario for the team.
However, that does open the door for the return of Mohammed Shami, whose non-inclusion in Kolkata was a matter of controversy and surprise. Shami, if fit, likely comes in for Nitish Kumar Reddy, who provides batting depth and part-time pace. However, Nitish could remain in the team due to Abhishek’s injury, proving India batting until number 7, and as many as seven different bowling options to use in Chennai.
Equally, however, Gautam Gambhir enjoys batting depth in his limited overs teams, and he might go for more of a like-for-like switch and bring in Dhruv Jurel for Abhishek, slot him in the number four slot, and give Shami another day of rest before heading to the more pace-friendly tracks coming up later in the series. Arshdeep Singh’s ability to lead the pace bowling will be heartening for fans and coaches alike, with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj earning a much-deserved rest in the wake of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
India will naturally be considered favourites in the slow and turning conditions in Chennai, even if England add a third spin option with Rehan Ahmed. The gulf in quality across the spin trios will likely be telling, as will the comfort of the Indian batters in hitting big against spin compared to their English counterparts. However, it’s not an easy selection call for Gautam Gambhir and his staff to make, which could complicate matters, and allow England to take advantage of an imbalance, especially in terms of India’s batting if Abhishek Sharma is missing due to his injury.
India will start off as the team like to take a 2-0 lead with a victory, but it is silly to write off the firepower England possess. It might come down to how successful India are in containing the visitors once again.
Here are some pointers to India vs England 2nd T20I:
- England were restricted to a score of 165/9 in 20 overs
- Jos Buttler was dismissed by Axar Patel on 45 off 30 balls
- Varun Chakravarthy dismissed Harry Brook once again
- Arshdeep Singh and Washington Sundar struck in the powerplay
- India won the toss and chose to bowl first
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Wow what a contest this is early on. This is not a walk in the park for India, unlike what was the case in the first T20I.
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Some early success here for the England pacers. Archer has kept it at a hard length throughout this over and the Indian batter finally succumbs. He rocked back and tried to muscle a pull shot third ball, ends up holing out at deep backward square.
Samson c Carse b Archer 5 (7)
India 19/2 in 2.3 overs
India vs England LIVE SCORE: That was a 148kph scorcher from Wood, it thuds Abhishek on the back pad and the umpire raises his finger. Abhishek reviews. It shaped in and raced past Abhishek's inside edge, so no bat on it. Ball tracking suggests it would've hit top of the middle stump.
Abhishek Sharma lbw b Wood 12 (6)
India 15/1 in 1.3 overs
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Abhishek Sharma lays into England's spearhead. Samson takes a single first ball and then some steep bounce from Archer surprised Abhishek. Then just perfect timing from the batter as he elegantly lofts the third ball over covers for the first four of the innings. Abhishek then misses the upper cut fourth ball, which spat up again and then slaps the fifth over extra cover for four. Deep third comes up for the last ball and so Abhishek hits it exactly over that fielder's head for another four.
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Jofra Archer has the ball in his hands, Sanju Samson is on strike with Abhishek Sharma at the other end. India are chasing a target of 166.
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Another day, same story. Except that England have got some more runs on board than they did in the first T20I. However, this may not really count for much though. Considering the conditions and the dew that is surely going to come in, this is a below par score.
India vs England LIVE SCORE: He has bowled just two overs today but Pandya has been absolutely exceptional today and he deserved this wicket. Rashid tries to pull, gets an edge to it and Samson gloves it. Pandya doesn't celebrate at all.
Rashid c Samson b Pandya 10 (11)
England 157/9 in 19 overs
India vs England LIVE SCORE: An over is supposed to start within 60 seconds of the previous one ending. Now India have in recent years not been too good with keeping up over-rate in T20Is and the umpire seems to be giving Pandya a warning as he ambles up to start bowling the 19th over. India have already been given two warnings for this and a third breach would give England five runs.
England 153/8 in 18 overs
India vs England LIVE SCORE: It just gets worse and worse for England. Brydon Carse, who was looking so good, is done because Jofra Archer gave an assortment of 'Yes's and 'No's instead of one single call. Archer could be seen saying no to the second run while trudging down the pitch, then motioning with his hands (!!!!) to come through, and then saying no again by which point he himself was almost halfway down the pitch. The throw came at the non-striker's end though and Carse is gone for all money.
Carse run out (Jurel/Ravi Bishnoi) 31 (17)
England 136/8 in 16.1 overs
India vs England LIVE SCORE: He got pummelled a bit in this over but he strikes with the last ball of his spell. Carse smashed two sixes off the first two balls of that over Then three more runs off the fourth and fifth balls and then Overton looks completely lost off the last. He hangs back and plays for the spin but this is the googly, it skids through and the stumps are a mess.
Overton b Varun 5 (7)
England 136/7 in 16 overs
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Bishnoi comes back for the 15th over. That is three different bowlers for the last three overs now and the England players are just not being able to settle. Just three runs in the 15th over from Bishnoi. Jamie Overton has scored five in six, Brydon Carse on strike on 15 off 11. Varun Chakravarthy returns now for the 16th.
England 121/6 in 15 overs
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Six, four and out. This innings is going nowhere for England, Jamie Smith the latest wicket and this time, it is Abhishek Sharma who strikes. Smith seemed to have been picking the Indian bowlers well, dances down the track to Abhishek and tries to go inside out over cover after getting 10 off the first two balls. But this time, he ends up holing out to Tilak Varma.
Smith c Tilak Varma b Abhishek Sharma 22 (12)
England 106/6 in 12.2 overs
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Livingstone pulls the first ball of the 12th over straight into the hands of deep backward square leg. It was shortish from Axar, angling into the batter. Livingstone rocks back and goes for the big booming pull, there is more lift on the ball after it bounces though and that does the batter in.
Livingstone c sub (Harshit Rana) b Patel 13 (14)
England 90/5 in 11.1 overs
India vs England LIVE SCORE: It might be ridiculously early to say it but that might just be the game folks. Jos Buttler tries to hit Axar's second ball in the 10th over out of the park but he ends up finding deep midwicket. Once again, England are crumbling to spin and this time, their lone pillar has fallen in the first 10 overs as well.
Buttler c Tilak Varma b Patel 45 (30)
England 77/4 in 9.3 overs
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Buttler will have to do the heavy-lifting once again. Bishnoi continues in the eighth over and the batters can run just five in it. Buttler has reached 43 in 26 balls, head and shoulders above the rest of the batters in this England lineup. Liam Livingstone on two off five balls.
England 66/3 in 8 overs
India vs England LIVE SCORE: That smog comment is going to haunt Brook throughout this tour. Varun Chakravarthy takes the ball in the seventh over and there is a big appeal for LBW off the first ball against Buttler. Umpire gives not out and his call is held up when India review. Buttler works the second ball to long on for a single and then Brook loses his bails the very first ball he faces against Chakravarthy. He just couldn't pick the googly, played for the wrong line entirely and falls. Chakravarthy looks at Brook with a wry smile almost like he was asking him which part of Chennai he would've smashed that ball to if it wasn't for the pesky smog that is obviously affecting no one but him in Chennai, as was the case in Kolkata.
Brook b Varun 13 (8)
England 59/3 in 6.3 overs
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Well Buttler said that England are going to ramp up the aggression and he is walking to talk allright, with Brook doing very well indeed at the other end. Two singles off the first and third balls of the fifth over bowled by Axar and then Brook smashes the fourth over mid-on for a six. Then he drives the fifth offside for a four and finishes that over on 12 off five balls. Bishnoi bowls the last over of the powerplay and Buttler welcomes him with a six right over his head. Five more runs in that over and at the end of it, Buttler is batting on 37 off 20 balls, Brook on 13 off seven balls.
England 58/2 in 6 overs
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Oh Duckett's favourite shot is the reason for his demise today. He goes for a reverse sweep but ends up hitting the ball into his pad. It spoons up and Jurel takes an easy catch at point. Sundar strikes with his first ball at home.
Duckett c Jurel b Washington Sundar 3 (6)
England 26/2 in 3.1 overs
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Jos Buttler has taken on India's strike bowler and come out on top. He crashes the second ball over midwicket for a four, then goes for another biggie next ball and that falls just short of Pandya at long. The batters run two there, then Buttler misses the reverse slap and then he picks the off cutter to perfection and sends it soaring back over the bowler's head. The last ball is cut away for a four and Buttler is on 18 off 10 at the end of that over.
England 26/1 in 3 overs
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Which is in stark contrast to how he started out in Kolkata. Ben Duckett needed some attention after he took the second ball on his helmet. It struck him on the grill and so his ears would've been ringing for a few seconds. He takes a single next ball and Buttler takes another off the last to stay on strike.
England 10/1 in 2 overs
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Salt made a different, more aggressive start today, but the end result is the same: he has to walk back in the first over of the match. Short ball from Arshdeep but it doesn't rise as much as Salt expected, he plays a half-hearted pull shot and picks out deep square leg to perfection. Jos Buttler walks out in the first over once again.
Salt c Washington Sundar b Arshdeep Singh 4 (3)
England 6/1 in 0.4 overs
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Phil Salt is on strike, Ben Duckett at the other end. Arshdeep Singh is steaming in. The 2nd T20I is underway at the Chepauk Stadium.
India vs England LIVE SCORE: The AQI in Chennai is generally in the green today and so it would be strange if Harry Brook blames the smog again. Once again, England will be put to the sword by India's spinners. In fact, India have gone with four of them today with the addition of Sundar.
India vs England LIVE SCORE: There is no Bethell today and Jamie Smith is making his T20I debut. Brydon Carse replaces Gus Atkinson.
England XI: Ben Duckett, Philip Salt(w), Jos Buttler(c), Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Jamie Smith, Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Homeboy Washington Sundar is in the team, as is Dhruv Jurel.
India: Sanju Samson(w), Abhishek Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav(c), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Washington Sundar, Dhruv Jurel, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Well the pacer is out there with Gautam Gambhir and SKY immediately goes to have a chat with the Indian head coach after he is done with the toss but they have decided to keep Shami out once again. It is quite clear now that this is tactical.
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Ravi Shastri has Jos Buttler and Suryakumar Yadav with him. SKY spins it into the sky, Buttler calls ‘Heads’ but no luck for him. Suryakumar says India are bowling first.
India vs England LIVE SCORE: "The level of cricket in the domestic [circuit] is extremely high," Varun said on the eve of the second T20I against England in Chennai. "I would say [it is] almost on par with IPL and the other international matches we play. I would really suggest everyone to go and play the Syed Mushtaq Ali because we play on small grounds. It is very challenging [for bowlers]."
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Jacob Bethell missed training on Friday for England. Jamie Smith could take his place today if he doesn't play and thus make his T20I debut. Bethell has made quite a dream start to his international career in all three formats and a testament to his potential is the fact that KKR acquired him despite the fact that he hadn't played a single ball in India. However, KKR fans couldn't get much of a look at him in the first T20I. It was a tortured stay in the middle for him and he finally perished after scoring seven runs in 14 balls.
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Out of the 12 T20Is England have played against India in India, they have lost seven and won five. Three of those seven losses have come on the trot.
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Abhishek has never really looked back since he hit top form in the IPL last year, except maybe for a few T20Is after his international debut. Since the start of IPL 2024, Abhishek has a strike rate of 191.71 in powerplays in T20 cricket. Only Travis Head, his Sunrisers Hyderabad opening partner, has a better powerplay strike rate (195.71) in this period.
India vs England LIVE SCORE: This is just in. The BCCI has said that Nitish Reddy sustained a "side strain injury" in the practice session yesterday in Chennai and has been "ruled out of the ongoing 5-match T20I series". He will now head to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for "further management".
"Rinku Singh sustained a low back spasm while fielding in the 1st T20I against England on 22nd January. He is progressing well and the BCCI medical team is monitoring him closely. He is ruled out of the 2nd and 3rd games of the ongoing 5-match T20I series," the board further said.
Shivam Dube and Ramandeep Singh have been added the to squad as replacement.
India vs England LIVE SCORE: With the last T20I match at the Chepauk coming six years ago, we have to look at the IPL to get an idea of what to expect today. Chepauk was always known as a ground for the spinners but it was the pacers that enjoyed more success here last year. Six of the nine IPL 2024 matches hosted at this venue were won by chasing sides, with an average first innings score of 170.
India vs England LIVE SCORE: Dew could play a major role in the second half of the match.
India vs England LIVE SCORE: A grand total of two English players looked capable of competing in any way against India in Kolkata (it would've been three had it not been for the darned smog that blocked Harry Brook's vision). Jos Buttler was as majestic as ever as he went about smashing 68 in 44 balls. He never looked like he was forcing the runs to come and yet, he struck at 154.54. When he did start trying to force the shots, he perished. Later, Jofra Archer was pretty much the only bowler who could keep the Indians from scoring at will and Buttler got him to bowl all four of his overs on the trot, considering England were defending just 133. He finished with figures of 2/21 and Abhishek Sharma went berzerk as soon as Archer was done with his spell.
India vs England LIVE SCORE: England's current head coach Brendon McCullum was player of the match in the first-ever T20I played at the Chepauk. New Zealand, led by Ross Taylor, batted first against MS Dhoni's India on September 11, 2012. McCullum smashed 95 in 55 balls as New Zealand put up a score of 167/5. In response, Virat Kohli, then opening with India's current head coach Gautam Gambhir, smashed 70 in 41 balls, but Suresh Raina and those that came after him - Yuvraj Singh, Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, couldn't accelerate and India ended up losing to 166/4 in 20 overs. James Franklin defended the required 13 runs in the final over.
The second match was against the West Indies in November 2018 and this time, India won by six wickets. An incredible 53 not out off 25 balls by Nicholas Pooran took the West Indies to a score of 181/3. However, Shikhar Dhawan smashed 92 in 62 balls to lead India's chase and a misfield by bowler Fabian Allen off the last ball of the match allowed Manish Pandey to take the winning single.
India Vs England LIVE SCORE: Suryakumar Yadav and Jos Buttler have both played a number of times here in the IPL. Buttler averages 24.5 with a strike rate of 108.88 for his 98 runs in 4 innings in T20s in Chennai. Suryakumar has scored 347 runs in 11 innings here, at a strike rate of 130.94
India Vs England LIVE SCORE: Arshdeep Singh overtook Yuzvendra Chahal as India's all-time highest wicket-taker in T20Is in the first match in Kolkata. He finished the match with a career tally of 97 wickets and now, he is three away from becoming the first Indian to take 100 wickets in the format.
India Vs England LIVE SCORE: While Harry Brook acknowledged that he and the rest of England have struggled against spin, the star batter gave another reason as to why they failed so spectacularly in Kolkata. “Chakaravarthy is an exceptionally good bowler,” Brook said. “But with the smog the other night, it was a lot harder to pick. Hopefully, the air is a bit clearer here, and we can see the ball a bit easier.”
Brook has been signed up by Delhi Capitals. FYI.
India Vs England LIVE SCORE: He obviously doesn't play for CSK but so deep is Varun Chakravarthy's connection with the Chepauk that it doesn't really matter where he plays his IPL home matches. First of all, Varun plays for Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket. Moreover, he first made a name playing in the Tamil Nadu Premier League and even before that, he had started out in his cricket career as a net bowler for CSK.
India Vs England LIVE SCORE: The chastening defeat in the first T20I hasn't deterred England one bit. In fact, captain Jos Buttler said that they would be even more aggressive towards the Indian spinners than they were in Kolkata. “We just didn’t quite impose the game that we wanted to play. If anything, we’ll be more aggressive and come back harder in the next one," Buttler had told the media after the match. “We’re always trying to be aggressive in T20 cricket. On the day sometimes it won’t come off but we’re backing everyone in the dressing room to play however they want to play and commit to it.”
India Vs England LIVE SCORE: Chepauk Stadium is arguably best known as the den of the mighty Chennai Super Kings nowadays. This only makes it more surprising that this venue is hosting a T20 international for just the... wait for... THIRD time! That's right, in the 18 years that India has been hosting T20Is, the Chepauk Stadium has been used as a venue just twice.
India Vs England LIVE SCORE: Shami was among the first batch of Indian bowlers to train on Friday evening here at the Chepauk. Bowling coach Morne Morkel was keeping a keen eye on him as he went through the motions. Notably, he had protective layers on both his knees.
India Vs England LIVE SCORE: Suryakumar Yadav dropped a bombshell at toss ahead of the first match that Shami won't be playing. It led to a myriad questions over Shami's fitness, considering he was widely expected to play his first international since the final of the 2023 World Cup as he was included in the squad. And if it wasn't fitness, well, tactically the ploy worked for India as they enjoyed a record win over England but then physios could be scratching their heads wondering why in the world a recovering Shami has been picked if all his workload is going to go in the nets and warm-ups. If he is included today, one of the spinners will have to go and the prime candidate for that is Ravi Bishnoi.
India Vs England LIVE SCORE: Ben Duckett, Philip Salt(w), Jos Buttler(c), Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, Saqib Mahmood, Gus Atkinson, Jamie Smith, Rehan Ahmed
India Vs England LIVE SCORE: Sanju Samson(w), Abhishek Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav(c), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, Mohammed Shami, Washington Sundar, Dhruv Jurel, Harshit Rana
India Vs England LIVE SCORE: Hello all you wonderful people. Welcome to our coverage for the 2nd T20I between India and England, which will be played in Chennai tonight. The series opener was expected to land a punch, but it ended in a whimper more than a bang as India ran England ragged, demolishing them in less than 13 overs. But with four more matches to go, England know they have enough time to recover from the smashing in Kolkata. Unlike the Eden Gardens, the Chepauk deck is expected to be a tad sluggish. So what may not have been a winning total at the Eden Gardens, certainly can at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
