Delhi AQI remains ‘very poor’ but Grap 3 not invoked
Delhi's Air Quality Deteriorates to 'Very Poor' on January 20, 2025
On January 20, 2025, Delhi's air quality index (AQI) deteriorated to the 'very poor' category, reaching 368 at 4 PM, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). This marked a significant increase from the previous day's AQI of 255. Despite this decline, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in the National Capital Region (NCR) chose not to implement Stage 3 measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). This decision was based on a subsequent improvement in air quality, with the AQI dropping to 360 by 8 PM.
Forecasts Indicate Temporary Improvement
The Centre’s Early Warning System for Delhi (EWS) forecasts a temporary improvement in air quality, with the AQI expected to fall into the 'poor' category from January 20 to 21. However, the EWS anticipates a return to the 'very poor' category on January 22.
Public Health Advisory
Health experts advise residents to limit outdoor activities and use air purifiers indoors to mitigate the adverse effects of the 'very poor' air quality. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions, are particularly at risk.
