BCCI Selectors To Meet On January 11 To Pick India's Champions Trophy 2025 Squad: Report - News18

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors will meet on Saturday (January 11) to pick the squad for the men’s 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan and the UAE, according to The Hindustan Times. The squad finalization deadline is Sunday.

The announcement would likely come by the end of this week. This squad, though, will only be a provisional one which can be changed till February 13.

This kind of flexibility would be quite useful for the BCCI. The selectors and all stakeholders are under a bit of pressure to help the team deliver in white-ball cricket after a series of woeful results in Tests, with the 3-1 series defeat to Australia being the most recent.

For instance, it can allow the selectors to manage Jasprit Bumrah better. Though currently there’s a huge cloud of injury over him after he suffered back spasms in Sydney last week, the selectors can name him in the provisional squad and keep a replacement ready if the vice-captain gets sidelined.

“Most likely, this time he felt a tightness in the upper back," The Times of India quoted a former India pacer as saying on Wednesday. “The reports have gone to his surgeon, we should have the final results very soon. My hunch is he will be part of the first squad that will be announced for CT. After all, you can have an injury replacement later."

“Bumrah is a treasure and he should be handled with care. A CT is not the end of the world. If there is the slightest doubt, he shouldn’t be in the squad. Five back-to-back Test matches isn’t something he has ever played in his cricketing career," a former India trainer Ramaji Srinivasan said in the report.

Many other key questions are hanging in front of the selectors. There have been reports suggesting that skipper Rohit Sharma’s place as ODI captain could be at risk after the loss in Australia.

There are unresolved issues from the 2023 World Cup like the finisher’s spot in the playing 11, a second pacer in case of Mohammed Shami’s absence due to injury, the composition of the spin attack, and worthy backups who can impact games.
