The revelation by Dr Li challenges everything about weight gain.

Every time there is a discussion around weight gain, the first body parts that come to mind are usually the belly, thighs or maybe the arms. But what if we tell you that this is far from the truth? According to world-renowned physician and scientist Dr William Li, the body part where the fat gets built up first is much more surprising. Any guesses? Well, the first place you start accumulating fat is not visible at all, it’s your tongue!

Yes, you read that right. In a candid conversation on The Mel Robbins Podcast, Dr Li explained how fat growth takes place and the video is now making waves on social media.

The Fat Tongue Theory

During the chat, Dr Li explained that while most people assume fat shows up first in their belly or thighs, research has found otherwise. “The human tongue is made of three parts. The tip of the tongue is flexible, the middle is strong and muscular, and the back is like a big fat pillow. About a third of it is fat, which helps food slide into your stomach. When you start gaining weight, extra fat builds up in the back of your tongue, and that’s one of the first places your body stores it,” Dr Li shared.

Sign That Tongue Is Getting Fat

So how can you tell if fat has begun building up in your tongue? Dr Li explains it in the simplest way possible. He said that a person starts snoring because of fat growth in the tongue. He explained, “When you’re asleep, your tongue relaxes, and if it’s holding extra fat, it can block your airway. This leads to snoring or even waking up suddenly, gasping for air. And this has been studied even in skinny people who start gaining fat.”

Why the Video is Going Viral

The clip of Dr Li revealing the shocking truth has everyone’s attention because it challenges what we know about weight gain. Reacting, a user wrote, “Absolutely intriguing and fascinating.” Someone else joined in to add, “This makes so much sense! I used to snore but after losing 60lbs, I don’t!”

Amid this, a section of people also asked for an explanation for people who are not overweight but still snore. One of the comments read, “I know people who are not overweight and snore. Explain that.” An individual claimed, “Although my partner is super thin and snores too!”

Dr. Li has over 30 years of research experience in metabolism and health. He is also the bestselling author of several books on food and fat-burning systems.
