India’s domestic travel landscape is witnessing a subtle yet powerful transformation. Travellers are increasingly moving away from fast-paced itineraries and crowded experiences, seeking instead depth, privacy, and meaningful connections. In this emerging paradigm, luxury is no longer defined by speed or spectacle, it is measured by the quality of experiences, the authenticity of surroundings, and the emotional resonance of a stay.

Nibhrant Shah, Managing Director & Co-CEO, Isprava Group, which oversees Lohono Stays, explains, “We’re seeing a clear cultural shift in domestic tourism, where luxury is no longer defined by speed or spectacle, but by depth, privacy, and emotional connection. Travellers are prioritizing quality over quantity, choosing to spend extended time in destinations and seeking experiences that feel personalised. Luxury home stays are at the heart of this movement, offering not just comfort but character.”

According to Shah, the concept of luxury has evolved to be intimate, immersive, and quietly indulgent. “Our homes and service are designed to offer luxury that’s intimate, immersive, and quietly indulgent. This trend aligns with the belief that true luxury is inherently slow, allowing for a deeper appreciation of craftsmanship, local traditions, and meaningful moments that rushed travel simply cannot offer,” he adds.

The shift toward slow, meaningful travel is also visible in the broader premium villa and homestay market. Ritwik Khare, Founder and CEO, ELIVAAS, observes that modern travellers are prioritizing experiences that allow them to recharge and disconnect from the pace of everyday life. He cites a recent Fortune India report highlighting that over 50% of Indian travellers are opting for longer holidays, with nearly 84% willing to spend more to ensure depth and comfort in their experiences.

“Instead of hopping across destinations, people now prefer to stay in one place that offers both modern amenities and the beauty of natural surroundings. Villas and homestays located in strategic locations fit perfectly into this need, they allow guests to unwind, enjoy nature, and still have everything they require at their fingertips,” says Khare.

Khare emphasizes that the demand is no longer for doing more, but for living better. Guests at ELIVAAS properties increasingly choose longer stays, seeking privacy while immersing themselves in authentic regional experiences—be it local cuisine, cultural explorations, or quality time with family and friends.

“The focus is no longer on doing more but on living better: quality over quantity, enrichment over exhaustion,” Khare notes.

This evolution in travel preferences is also creating sustainable value for villa owners, as their properties become central to India’s domestic tourism narrative. Both Shah and Khare agree that slow luxury is not just a passing trend but a fundamental shift in how Indian travellers perceive premium experiences.

In essence, the domestic travel story is being rewritten. As Nibhrant Shah succinctly puts it, “Luxury is inherently slow,” while Ritwik Khare reinforces that meaningful, immersive experiences are what today’s travellers seek. Together, their insights illustrate a clear trajectory for India’s premium hospitality sector: one where quality, connection, and authenticity are the ultimate markers of a truly luxurious stay.
