Nestled atop a lofty hill in Amarachinta Mandal of Wanaparthy district in Telangana, Chandraghad Fort is a hidden gem that blends history, spirituality, and nature. Just half a kilometre from Amarachinta village, on the road to the Priyadarshini Jurala Project, the fort stands like a silent sentinel — a warrior frozen in time.

Dating back to the 18th century, Chandraghad Fort was built by Chandrasen Maharaja of the Chandragiri dynasty in the erstwhile Gadwal princely state. Designed as an impregnable stronghold, its mighty walls, imposing gates, and strategically placed cannons speak volumes about the military ingenuity and architectural brilliance of that era.

The fort boasts two gates — the northern gate now closed — and a remarkable system of 12 wells carved into the rock to ensure a steady water supply, which to this day, never dries up. This feat remains a testament to the engineering expertise of its time.

A Spiritual Heart At The Fort

At the heart of Chandraghad Fort lies the Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple, dedicated to the fort’s beloved deity. This temple holds deep cultural and religious significance. Unlike most temples, its rituals are performed exclusively by priests from the Arya Vaishya caste — a tradition tracing back to the fort’s founders. Special pujas are held here during festivals such as Rakhi Pournami, Mahashivratri, Nagula Chavithi, and every new moon day. On Mahashivratri, the fort comes alive with traditional kabaddi competitions, drawing devotees and visitors alike. Daily pujas, Abhishekams (ritual bathing of the deity), and Annadanas (community feeding) make it a place of devotion as well as cultural vibrancy.

A Scenic Escape

Chandraghad Fort is not just a historical monument — it is a visual feast. From the fort’s vantage point, visitors are treated to panoramic views of the Priyadarshini Jurala Project, lush green fields, tranquil ponds, and charming villages stretching into the horizon. It is a perfect blend of history and nature, making it an ideal destination for a weekend getaway.

How To Plan Your Visit

The fort is located about 25 km from Gadwal, 50 km from Mahabubnagar, and roughly 170 km from Hyderabad, making it an accessible retreat for city dwellers. Whether you are drawn by its historical grandeur, spiritual ambience, or breath-taking scenery, Chandraghad Fort offers a unique experience — a journey into the past combined with the peaceful charm of nature.
