Parents often wonder when and how they should start brushing their children’s teeth. Dental specialist Dr Moin Khan explains that brushing should begin as soon as a child’s first tooth appears. Introducing this habit early on helps establish a lifelong routine that supports children’s dental health and reduces the risk of future problems.

Care For Baby Teeth

Recommended Stories

Dr Khan points out a common misconception among parents that baby teeth do not require much care because they will eventually fall out. However, this is not true.

Baby teeth serve as the foundation for adult teeth, and neglecting them can lead to tooth decay, cavities, and gum issues even at a young age.

Frequency Of Brushing

He emphasises the importance of brushing twice daily, in the morning and before bed.

Throughout the day, food particles accumulate on the teeth, and if not removed, especially before sleeping, they provide a breeding ground for bacteria that can damage the teeth and gums.

Selecting The Right Toothbrush And Toothpaste

Selecting the right toothbrush is also critical. Dr Khan advises using a small toothbrush appropriate for the child’s age, with very soft bristles to protect delicate gums. A hard-bristled brush can cause gum injury and discourage children from brushing.

Regarding toothpaste, he recommends choosing one with a low fluoride content for young children. Only a pea-sized amount should be applied to very young children’s brushes to avoid any harm if swallowed.

Making Brushing Fun

Dr Khan stresses that parents should make brushing a fun activity to encourage their children. Brushing alongside them, turning it into a game, or using songs, stories, or timers can help maintain children’s interest and prevent boredom.

Instilling Good Oral Hygiene Habits

The specialist further notes that the period from six months to six years is the most crucial for instilling good oral hygiene habits. If parents are consistent during this time, children are more likely to continue brushing regularly as they grow, staying protected from dental problems.

Importance Of Regular Dental Check-Ups

Finally, Dr. Moin Khan advises parents to take their children for dental check-ups every six months. Regular visits help detect and address any early signs of dental issues promptly.
