Yoghurt, or curd, is an integral part of the Indian diet and is consumed daily in most households. Known for its taste and nutritional value, curd is packed with probiotics that aid digestion, boost immunity, and benefit skin and hair. However, experts caution that consuming curd is not always suitable for everyone, and its benefits greatly depend on timing, weather conditions, and individual health.

Dr Akanksha Dixit, an AYUSH doctor at Shivgarh Community Health Centre in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, told Local 18 that while curd is highly beneficial, consuming it incorrectly can cause more harm than good.

She explains that curd is best consumed during the day, particularly at lunchtime, when it supports digestion and provides energy. Eating curd on an empty stomach in the morning, however, may trigger acidity and increase mucus in the stomach.

Health Benefits of Curd

  • Probiotics in curd enhance good bacteria in the gut, ensuring smooth digestion.
  • Regular consumption strengthens the body’s defence against seasonal infections.
  • A rich source of calcium and phosphorus, curd promotes bone health.
  • High protein content helps curb overeating by keeping the stomach fuller for longer.
  • Provides natural moisture to the skin and nourishes hair.

Who Should Avoid Curd

Experts advise that people suffering from cold, cough, or allergies should avoid eating curd at night. Similarly, individuals with lactose intolerance should consume curd in moderation. While curd can be a powerhouse of nutrition, knowing the right way, time, and quantity to consume it is key to reaping its full benefits.
