After visiting India, Lowri Denman, a woman from the United Kingdom, had brain scans that showed 38 parasite cysts, turning what at first appeared to be an inexplicable neurological condition into a spectacular medical case. Later, medical professionals determined that she had neurocysticercosis, a parasite condition that affects the nervous system and brain.
Infectious disease experts claim that although Denman’s illness is rare in the UK, it is still a significant public health concern in many regions of Asia, Africa and Latin America. What Is Neurocysticercosis?
Although the larvae of the pig tapeworm (Taenia solium) cause neurocysticercosis, experts emphasise that consuming pork does not cause the illness. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that infection happens when tiny tapeworm eggs are inadvertently ingested through food, water or unwashed hands contaminated with human faeces.
