Ganesh Chaturthi 2025: Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most cherished festivals in India, especially in Maharashtra, where it is celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm. This year, the 10-day festival will be observed from August 27 to September 6. The festival marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune.

Every year during Ganesh Chaturthi, devotees welcome Lord Ganesha into their homes or community pandals for 10 days. The festival is not just religious but also a community celebration that brings people together.

On the first day, families bring home a Ganesha idol and perform rituals and daily worship. The festival concludes on Anant Chaturdashi, when the idol is taken out in a grand procession and immersed in a river or sea, symbolising the cycle of creation and dissolution and reminding devotees of the impermanence of life.

If you are planning to host Lord Ganesha at home this Ganesh Chaturthi, here are some simple dos and don’ts to make the celebration meaningful and smooth.

Ganesh Chaturthi Dos And Don’ts After Ganpati Sthapana At Home

Treat Lord Ganesha as a respected guest throughout his stay

Whether you keep the idol for 3, 5, or all 10 days, remember that Lord Ganesha is a revered guest in your home. Offer him daily food, water, flowers and devotion. In Indian culture, treating guests well is akin to honouring God, following the principle of Atithi Devo Bhava.

Follow a pure and sattvik diet while Ganesha is at home

During the festival, it is important to maintain a sattvik (pure) diet. Even if you are not fasting, avoid alcohol and non-vegetarian foods. Additionally, it is best to stay away from tamasic foods like onion and garlic. Eating simple, clean food keeps the environment at home spiritual and respectful for the deity.

Keep your home positive and peaceful during the festival

A calm and harmonious atmosphere is essential when Lord Ganesha is present. Avoid arguments or conflicts and maintain kindness and positivity among family members. The deity is believed to bless homes that have a cheerful and peaceful environment.

Ensure someone is always present with the idol

Just like any important guest, Lord Ganesha should never be left alone. Make sure someone is present in the house with the idol at all times during his stay to maintain devotion and care.

Keep the main door open and invite friends and neighbours

During Ganesh Chaturthi, the main door of your house should remain open as a gesture of welcome. Invite friends, family and neighbours to offer their prayers and join in the festivities. Perform daily puja and aarti together to foster community and devotion.

Don’t forget the final aarti before Ganpati Visarjan

Before taking Lord Ganesha for immersion on Anant Chaturdashi, ensure you perform the final aarti and puja with devotion. This is a symbolic farewell, thanking the deity for his blessings and seeking his return next year.
