Ed Sheeran may be best known for his soulful ballads and chart-topping hits, but these days, the 34-year-old singer is also making headlines for something beyond music – his health. Sheeran opened up about his weight loss journey and revealed that he has lost 20 kilos and feels fitter than ever, crediting his lifestyle overhaul to quitting smoking, picking up running, and rethinking how he approaches food.

Quitting Smoking: The Turning Point

For years, Sheeran struggled with habits that weighed him down – literally and figuratively. But in 2019, he made a life-changing decision: to quit smoking. What began as an attempt to clear his lungs soon turned into a full-fledged wellness journey. Free from cigarettes, Sheeran found it easier to commit to exercise, and running quickly became his go-to activity. “There’s nothing like fresh air to really give you a clean out,” he told Andy Cohen.

Fitness on His Own Terms

Unlike many celebrities who turn to gyms and personal trainers, Sheeran admitted he never enjoyed traditional workouts. Instead, he opted for running outdoors daily, which offered not just fitness benefits but also a sense of freedom and routine. Initially, his goal was ambitious. He wanted to build a six-pack. While he jokes that late-night beers sometimes get in the way, Sheeran insists the effort has paid off. “I feel like I’m in the best shape of my life,” he shared.

Food, Balance, and Self-Awareness

Sheeran has also worked to change his relationship with food. In earlier interviews, he opened up about disordered eating patterns, admitting to bingeing. Now, he follows a more balanced approach. Fresh, home-cooked meals have replaced his love of constant takeout, and when he does indulge in favourites, he offsets them with extra workouts. It’s not about perfection but about balance – a philosophy that makes his transformation feel sustainable.

Beyond the physical changes, Sheeran’s story highlights a broader truth: wellness doesn’t have to mean chasing trends or sculpting an ‘ideal’ body. It can be about making small, consistent changes, such as swapping smoking for running or fast food for fresh meals, that add up over time. His honesty about setbacks, like giving in to beers with friends, makes the journey relatable to anyone trying to improve their health.
