The hottest approach to bridal jewellery is all about symbolism over sparkle. For decades, gold and diamonds have defined bridal trousseaus, but today’s brides are changing that.

In Indian weddings, jewellery has always been more than adornment. It is a language of tradition and devotion. For decades, gold and diamonds have been the hallmarks of bridal trousseaus, but today’s brides are rewriting that narrative. Increasingly, they are reaching for coloured gemstones such as radiant rubies, serene sapphires, and luminous emeralds that express individuality while staying rooted in legacy. This shift isn’t about discarding tradition; it’s about rephrasing it in ways that feel expressive, personal, and modern.

A Shift Towards Colour and Meaning

“Over the last few seasons, we’ve witnessed a distinct shift in bridal jewellery preferences. Modern brides are increasingly moving beyond conventional gold and diamond pieces to embrace coloured gemstones that reflect their individuality and sense of self-expression,” says Ramesh Kalyanaraman, Executive Director of Kalyan Jewellers.

Adding to this, Rhea Poddar Loyalka, GIA-certified gemologist and Director at Ma Passion, explains, “A diamond may be dazzling, but a sapphire with its velvety depth or a spinel with vibrant hues can feel just as luxurious.”

For today’s bride, every stone is unique – its shade, undertone, and inclusions mirroring her own personality.

Jewellery as Storytelling

The modern approach to bridal jewellery is not just about sparkle. It’s about symbolism. Aditya Modak, COO & CFO, Reva Diamonds by PNGS, observes: “Colored gemstones are a terrific way for couples to show off their personalities since they desire things that tell their own story.” From rubies symbolising passion to aquamarines embodying peace, each stone carries a meaning that resonates beyond the wedding day.

The groom, too, is joining the movement. Gemstones are now appearing in cufflinks, rings, and buttons, creating a quiet yet sophisticated contrast to traditional metals. “When couples select these stones together, the jewellery becomes more about a shared symbolism than ornamentation,” adds Rhea.

Design That Blends Heritage and Modernity

As bridal fashion evolves, brides are looking for pieces that combine old-world craftsmanship with everyday wearability. “The modern bride is also highly design-conscious. She likes craftsmanship that combines old and new styles,” Modak notes.

Shyamala Ramanan, Business Head, Mia by Tanishq, highlights another aspect: versatility. “Coloured gemstones are now moving beyond the bridal moment to become trousseau essentials. Brides are choosing jewellery that feels personal, with vibrant gems that transition seamlessly into everyday wear.”

Legacy in Colour

Perhaps the most striking quality of coloured gemstones is their ability to become heirlooms. Unlike mass-produced pieces, each stone is singular, carrying imperfections that make it irreplaceable. A tourmaline ring or opal necklace doesn’t just mark a wedding day. It tells a family story, passed down with emotional and cultural resonance.

The Future of Bridal Jewellery

Coloured gemstones are no longer a fleeting trend; they represent a new language of bridal style. They embody individuality, storytelling, and legacy – values that resonate with modern couples. As brides and grooms continue to embrace stones that feel personal and expressive, the future of bridal jewellery looks set to be vibrant, meaningful, and luminous.
