Yes, we are all aware of the fact that smoking causes harmful effects to each and every part of the body, and the lungs, being directly exposed to smoke, bear the maximum brunt. But smoking is not the only culprit damaging our lungs; there are many other lifestyle habits causing ill effects to our respiratory system.

Dr. Sandeep Nayar, Principal Director & HOD, Chest & Respiratory Diseases, BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, shares all you need to know:

Air Pollution

Air Pollution itself can damage our lungs. Staying in a polluted atmosphere and inhaling various harmful gases can cause diseases like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), asthma, and even cancer.

Sedentary Lifestyle

A sedentary lifestyle also worsens our respiratory system by weakening muscles, including those involved in respiration. This leads to reduced lung capacity, increased breathlessness, and people becoming exhausted easily. The chances of getting respiratory infections, as well as the incidence of COPD, are also increased.

Occupational exposure, especially for those working in mining, construction, etc., where they are exposed to harmful fumes and toxins, affects the lungs. In addition, inadequate respiratory protection and poor ventilation in mines increase exposure to harmful dust. Many workers are exposed to coal and silica particles, leading to diseases like pneumoconiosis, which causes lung scarring and leads to shortness of breath. In addition, it may also result in an increase in respiratory infections and COPD.

Alcohol consumption, especially heavy alcohol use, can weaken the body’s natural defence system. This negatively impacts overall health, including the lungs. A decrease in immune system function, disruption of mucociliary clearance, and damage to the alveolar epithelial barrier lead to a higher risk of lung infections.

Diet

Diet also plays a significant role in keeping our lungs healthy. A healthy, well-balanced diet goes a long way in keeping your body strong, including your lungs. Antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, and lean proteins help in maintaining good lung health. Avoid processed and fried foods, excessive salt, and high-sugar items, which may cause harm to the lungs.

In addition, keeping yourself well-hydrated is very important to maintain healthy lungs. Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water daily to help keep the airways clear.

Maintaining good body posture is also essential to keep our lungs healthy. Slouching or a forward-head posture can reduce lung volume. A simple technique for giving your lungs even more room is leaning back slightly in a stable chair, lifting the chest, and opening the front of your body as you breathe deeply.

Maintaining a good lifestyle is the utmost important part of our lives. Do take out time for yourself from your hectic schedule and follow simple rules to remain healthy.
