Our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are closely linked to the health of our nervous system. This vital system controls the brain, memory, mood, and overall bodily functions. Often, we unknowingly develop habits that gradually weaken our nerves, leading to anxiety, depression, fatigue, loneliness, low energy, and social withdrawal.

If left unchecked, these habits can significantly affect mental health. Maintaining a positive and balanced lifestyle can help keep the brain and nervous system healthy over time. The first step is recognising behaviours that contribute to mental fatigue and learning how to address them.

Lack of Sleep

According to the American Psychological Association, inadequate sleep can tire the brain and weaken memory. Chronic sleep deprivation may also increase the risk of migraines and Alzheimer. Experts recommend 7 to 9 hours of sleep daily, maintaining a consistent sleep-wake schedule, and reducing screen time before bedtime.

Excessive Screen Time

Constantly looking at phones or laptops strains both the eyes and the brain, increasing fatigue and anxiety. Experts suggest following the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Stress

Continuous stress puts pressure on the brain and can disrupt hormonal balance, affecting both sleep and mental health. Activities like yoga, meditation, or journaling can help manage stress effectively.

Poor Diet

Reliance on junk food and processed meals can weaken the nervous system. Nutrients such as vitamin B, omega-3, and magnesium are essential for brain function. Including green vegetables, fruits, nuts, and fish in your diet can help maintain nervous system health.

Sedentary Lifestyle

Prolonged sitting affects blood circulation and brain activity. Regular physical activity, such as 30 minutes of walking, cycling, or yoga daily, can help keep the nervous system active.

Overconsumption of Alcohol and Coffee

While moderate coffee may be beneficial, excessive consumption can cause restlessness and disturb sleep. Alcohol can also damage nerves. Limiting coffee and alcohol intake and opting for herbal teas or water is recommended.

Smoking and Pollution

Nicotine directly harms the nerves in the brain and increases the risk of stroke. Quitting smoking and avoiding polluted environments can protect nervous system health.

Ignoring Mental Health

Stress, anxiety, and depression directly strain the nervous system. Sharing your feelings with family or friends and seeking professional help when necessary can prevent long-term damage.

The nervous system is the foundation of physical and mental well-being. Simple habits like quality sleep, a balanced diet, regular exercise, and attention to mental health can help maintain energy, memory, and emotional stability for a long time.
