Spinach, one of the most popular leafy vegetables, is celebrated not only for its taste but also for its rich nutritional content, including iron, calcium, vitamins, and fibre. Growing spinach at home offers the added benefit of chemical-free, organic produce. The best part is that you don’t need a farm or large garden; pots and containers on a balcony, terrace, or small kitchen garden are sufficient.

Homegrown spinach allows repeated harvests, making it a sustainable and healthy addition to daily meals. Its ease of cultivation has made it increasingly popular among city dwellers. Here’s a simple guide to growing spinach at home in five easy steps, ensuring a constant supply of fresh, wholesome greens.

Right Container and Soil

Start with a deep container or pot, at least 6-8 inches deep, to allow roots to spread comfortably. A well-balanced soil mixture is essential: 70% garden soil, 20% rotten cow dung manure, and 10% river sand. This combination is nutrient-rich, light, and ensures quick seed germination and healthy green leaves.

Sow Seeds Properly

Prepare small pits 1-1.5 inches deep and place the seeds lightly, keeping a 2-3 inch gap between them. Cover with a thin layer of soil and provide light moisture using a spray, avoiding overwatering. Seedlings typically emerge within 5 to 7 days.

Regular Watering and Care

Spinach prefers moderate moisture. Avoid overwatering, which can rot the plants; water only when the soil feels dry. Loosen the soil around the plants occasionally and remove weeds promptly to encourage healthy growth.

Sunlight, Fertiliser, and Protection

Spinach thrives in light sunlight or partial shade. Apply organic fertilisers like cow dung manure or vermicompost every 10 to 12 days. Protect plants from pests using neem oil or neem cake, avoiding chemical fertilisers and pesticides to maintain organic quality.

Harvesting and Continuous Use

Leaves are ready for plucking 30 to 40 days after sowing. Harvest only the leaves, leaving the roots and central shoots to continue growing. This allows multiple harvests from the same pot, providing fresh spinach for several weeks.
