A tragic incident has been reported from Meghalaya, where a powerful explosion occurred inside an illegal coal mine, resulting in the death of at least 18 workers. The blast caused severe damage inside the mine, leaving several labourers trapped under debris. Rescue operations are currently underway to save those still feared to be stuck inside. Three teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed at the site and are working continuously under challenging conditions. Local administration, police, and disaster management teams are also assisting in the rescue efforts. The Central Government has assured the Meghalaya state government of full support. An ex-gratia compensation of ₹3 lakh each has been announced for the families of the deceased workers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are closely monitoring the situation and are in constant touch with the state authorities. The Centre has reiterated that all necessary resources and assistance will be provided to handle the crisis effectively. The incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with illegal coal mining in the region and raised serious concerns about worker safety and enforcement of mining regulations.
