Social activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day hunger strike after receiving assurances from the Central government during a late-night meeting with Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh. The government assured Wangchuk that no cases would be registered against students who participated peacefully in the Jantar Mantar protest and the July 20 Parliament march. It also promised discussions in Parliament on paper leaks and examination reforms, while positively considering compensation for families of students who allegedly died by suicide following the NEET paper leak controversy. Before ending his fast, Wangchuk emphasized the need to fix ministerial accountability and appealed to students to continue their movement peacefully without allowing anti-social elements to exploit the protests. Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Wangchuk’s decision and wished him a speedy recovery. Despite the end of Wangchuk’s hunger strike, CJP leaders said the protest at Jantar Mantar will continue until Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns. The party has also announced nationwide peaceful demonstrations in support of its demands.
