In a significant political shift ahead of the special Parliament session, the Samajwadi Party has announced its opposition to the proposed women’s reservation amendment. Senior party leader Ram Gopal Yadav stated that while the party continues to support women’s reservation in principle, it will oppose the current proposal, alleging “bad intent” by the government. The party’s concerns are primarily linked to the proposed delimitation process, which it believes is being unfairly tied to the implementation of the reservation policy. According to SP leaders, combining the two issues could lead to political imbalance, particularly affecting representation in certain regions, including southern states. Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has convened a crucial meeting with all party MPs, making attendance mandatory as the party prepares its strategy for the Parliament session. The move signals a coordinated opposition stance, aligning with broader concerns raised by other opposition parties. Earlier, leaders from multiple opposition groups had also voiced apprehensions during a meeting hosted by Mallikarjun Kharge, where the focus remained on the implications of delimitation rather than the reservation itself. The opposition argues that women’s reservation could have been implemented immediately, but linking it to delimitation raises political concerns. The government, however, is expected to push for simultaneous voting on related legislative measures, which could complicate the opposition’s strategy. The coming days in Parliament are likely to witness intense debate as both sides hold firm on their positions.
