North India Monsoon Fury: Cloudbursts Trigger Flash Floods Across J&K, Himachal and Uttarakhand

Heavy rainfall continues to wreak havoc across the northern Himalayan region, with Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand witnessing widespread destruction due to cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides. Several districts have been severely affected as rivers and streams swelled rapidly following intense downpours. In Kupwara, Jammu & Kashmir, a sudden cloudburst triggered a flash flood that swept through parts of a village, damaging infrastructure and washing away livestock. Authorities reported that while residents narrowly escaped, large-scale damage was caused to local roads and surrounding areas. Similar scenes of destruction were also reported in other parts of the Union Territory. In Anantnag, panic broke out when flash floods inundated a school area, trapping children temporarily before they were safely rescued by locals and emergency teams. Rescue operations involving police, SDRF, and civil administration were swiftly launched to assess the situation and assist affected residents. In Baramulla and Doda, intense rainfall led to landslides and flooding, bringing down rocks and debris that blocked roads and cut off connectivity in several remote areas. Restoration work has been slowed due to continuous rain and unstable terrain conditions. The situation in Himachal Pradesh remains equally grim. In regions such as Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, and Chamba, flash floods have damaged highways, washed away roads, and flooded homes. Authorities have closed multiple roads and reported disruptions in electricity supply due to damaged transformers. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing, but accessibility challenges are hampering efforts. Officials have advised residents in vulnerable areas to stay away from rivers and unstable slopes as weather conditions remain unpredictable. Across the Himalayan belt, repeated extreme rainfall events are highlighting the growing risks of monsoon-triggered disasters, with infrastructure and local communities under severe stress.
