Monsoon Mayhem: Heavy Rain Triggers Floods and Landslides Across Hill States

Heavy monsoon rains have once again disrupted life across the Himalayan states, with Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh facing floods, landslides, and infrastructure damage. In Uttarakhand, waterlogging, swollen rivers, and landslides blocked roads and endangered lives. Seven people trapped near the Santala Devi Temple in Dehradun were rescued by SDRF and police teams. Landslides were reported in Bageshwar and on the Maldevta–Sila Motor Road, while schools up to Class 12 in Dehradun were closed due to a heavy rain alert. In Himachal Pradesh, overflowing rivers inundated bridges and roads. Flash floods in Kinnaur damaged homes, a temple, and an ITBP camp, while landslides blocked roads in Chamba. A red alert remains in effect for several districts. Meanwhile, in Chhattisgarh’s Surajpur, a newly built low-level bridge (rapta) was washed away in the season’s first major rainfall, cutting off several villages and prompting an official inquiry into construction quality.
