The political temperature in Maharashtra has peaked as campaigning comes to an end for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and elections to 29 municipal corporations across the state. Voting will be held on January 15, while the results will be declared on January 16. The BMC elections, in particular, are being closely watched due to their political and financial significance. Mumbai’s BMC, the country’s richest municipal body, has a total of 286 seats, with nearly 1,700 candidates contesting the polls. After a long delay, these elections are finally being conducted, as the BMC has remained without an elected body since 2022. All major political parties have thrown their full weight behind the campaign, making it one of the most fiercely contested local elections in recent years. The importance of the BMC lies in its massive budget of ₹74,427 crore, which exceeds the annual budgets of several smaller Indian states and is even larger than that of Himachal Pradesh. For over 25 years, the Shiv Sena held control over the civic body, making this election crucial for reshaping Mumbai’s political landscape. With aggressive campaigning, sharp political rhetoric, and high voter interest, the BMC elections are expected to play a key role in determining the future balance of power in Maharashtra’s urban politics.
