J&K Flood Crisis: Death Toll Rises to 17 as Rain Triggers Widespread Devastation

Relentless rainfall and flash floods have caused widespread devastation across Jammu and Kashmir, with the death toll in Rajouri and Poonch rising to 17. Cloudbursts, overflowing rivers, and landslides have damaged homes, roads, and public infrastructure, while several people remain missing. The Darhali river embankment in Rajouri collapsed, sweeping away dozens of vehicles and flooding nearby residential areas. In Poonch’s Surankote, flash floods triggered by a cloudburst left multiple casualties and widespread destruction. Authorities have opened the gates of the Salal Dam in Reasi and issued alerts for downstream areas as the Tawi and Chenab rivers continue to swell. Rescue teams, including the police, SDRF, NDRF, and security forces, are conducting search and relief operations. Meanwhile, heavy rain has also disrupted life in Uttarakhand, where landslides, flooded roads, and swollen rivers prompted multiple rescue missions and school closures as authorities warned residents to avoid unnecessary travel.
