Delhi Gang-Rape Horror: Private Bus Driver and Conductor Arrested in National Capital

The national capital has been shaken by a horrific incident of sexual violence reported on May 12, 2024. In a grim echo of past tragedies that have haunted the city’s streets, a married woman and mother of three was allegedly gang-raped inside a private sleeper bus by the vehicle’s own driver and conductor. The incident has once again turned the spotlight on the gaping holes in women’s safety and the lack of accountability within the private transport sector in Delhi. The victim narrated a harrowing ordeal to the authorities, alleging that the two accused—the driver and the conductor—forcibly pulled her into the sleeper coach of the bus. Taking advantage of the secluded nature of the sleeper compartments and the absence of other passengers at the time, the duo allegedly locked the vehicle and committed the heinous crime. Following the victim’s brave decision to come forward, the Delhi Police initiated immediate protocols. The victim was shifted to a medical facility where a forensic examination was conducted, providing the primary evidence for the case. Utilizing technical surveillance and the victim’s description, the police successfully tracked down and arrested both the driver and the conductor. The private bus involved has been impounded. Forensic teams are currently conducting a detailed sweep of the vehicle to collect DNA samples, fingerprints, and other physical evidence essential for a conviction. This incident has reignited public fury over the safety of women in Delhi. Despite numerous promises of increased patrolling, the fact that a crime of such magnitude could occur within a commercial vehicle is a sobering reminder of the risks women face daily. As the investigation continues, there are growing calls for stricter background checks for transport staff and mandatory GPS and CCTV integration in all private sleeper buses.
