BREAKING: Tamil Nadu CM Vijay orders closure of liquor shops near schools & religious sites 500m ban

A major policy decision has been announced from Tamil Nadu, where Chief Minister Vijay has ordered a sweeping crackdown on liquor shops operating near sensitive public locations. According to the directive, all alcohol outlets situated close to religious places, schools, and colleges will be shut down as part of a new state-level regulation aimed at tightening restrictions on liquor availability in densely populated and socially sensitive areas. The new order specifies that no liquor shops will be allowed within a 500-meter radius of schools, colleges, and places of worship. In addition, shops located near bus stands and major public transport hubs will also be shut down. The government has set a compliance deadline of two weeks, within which all identified outlets must cease operations or relocate according to the revised norms. Officials indicate that the decision is part of a broader effort to address public concerns over the proximity of liquor outlets to educational institutions and religious sites. The move is expected to have a significant impact on retail liquor distribution across urban and semi-urban regions of the state. The announcement has triggered widespread discussion across political and social circles. Supporters of the decision have welcomed it as a step toward strengthening social discipline and protecting youth from easy access to alcohol. However, concerns are also being raised about the economic implications for vendors and businesses operating in the liquor retail sector, especially those located in high-traffic public areas. State authorities are expected to release detailed implementation guidelines soon, including the list of affected shops and relocation procedures. Enforcement agencies have also been instructed to ensure strict compliance within the stipulated timeframe. This policy decision marks one of the most significant regulatory changes in Tamil Nadu’s liquor distribution framework in recent years, and its implementation will be closely watched across the state.
