A major controversy has emerged over the release of notorious gangster Ravi Kana from Banda Jail, raising serious questions about jail administration and compliance with judicial orders. According to the Banda Jail Superintendent, Ravi Kana’s release was carried out strictly as per jail manual procedures. He stated that all release orders related to Ravi Kana’s registered cases had already been received, and no valid judicial remand order was available at the time of his release. Ravi Kana was produced before the Gautam Buddh Nagar court on January 29 through video conferencing under a B-warrant. However, the jail authorities claim that until 6:00 pm, no custody or remand order was received from the court. Despite waiting till around 6:30 pm, the jail did not receive any official communication regarding continued judicial custody. As a result, Ravi Kana was released under routine procedure, since there was no legal basis to keep him detained. Later, at around 7:45 pm, a judicial custody warrant was received on the jail’s official email. By then, Ravi Kana had already been released. The matter triggered alarm within judicial circles, prompting the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Gautam Buddh Nagar to seek an explanation from the Banda Jail Superintendent. The court has directed the jail administration to submit a detailed reply by February 6.
