BAKRID FLASHPOINT: Mira Road Clashes and Malihabad Protests Push Security Forces on Alert

Fresh communal tensions ahead of Bakrid have put authorities on high alert after protests, clashes and religious demonstrations erupted in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. The most intense standoff was reported from Poonam Estate Cluster in Mumbai’s Mira Road area, where a dispute over goats kept inside a residential society escalated into violence, protests and heavy police deployment. According to local reports, a temporary shed allegedly constructed for Bakrid sacrificial goats was dismantled by municipal authorities following complaints from some residents. The situation turned tense after attempts were reportedly made to rebuild the structure, triggering heated arguments between two groups. Visuals from the scene showed chaos and allegations of physical assault, with one protester claiming he suffered knife injuries during the confrontation. Police later registered an FIR and intensified security in the area. On Tuesday, members linked to Hindu organizations gathered outside the gated society and staged a protest by reciting Hanuman Chalisa and raising slogans demanding removal of the goats. Demonstrators accused civic authorities and police of failing to address residents’ concerns and warned of a larger agitation if action was not taken immediately. At the same time, another sensitive dispute surfaced in Malihabad near Lucknow, where Hindu groups protested near a site they claim is linked to Raja Kans and an ancient Hindu structure. Protesters announced plans to perform religious rituals and objected to offering namaz at the location during Bakrid. Heavy police deployment and barricading were put in place to prevent any escalation. The twin controversies have amplified concerns over law and order during the festive season, with authorities closely monitoring sensitive areas to prevent communal flare-ups and maintain peace amid rising political and religious tensions.
