Pokimane, a popular streamer on the Twitch platform, has talked about the rise of the backlash against Grok-AI, with the streamer going on to say that the recent events about Grok-AI have brought back painful memories of her past. This comes amidst the criticism levied against Grok, which is an AI-powered chatbot developed by xAI, as it allows people to use the platform and manipulate images of women in bad ways. The situation involving Pokimane escalated quickly on social media not only due to her popularity but also because of her personal experience with AI misuse. Pokimane related this situation to an incident of deepfake about her from several years ago, giving this issue of AI safety and responsibility a personal touch.

Pokimane connects Grok AI backlash to her past experience with deepfakes

While discussing the issue on stream, Pokimane made it clear that she is exhausted by the repeated misuse of AI technology. She said, “I am so sick… seeing this trend where other ppl have been removing… unfortunately 3 yrs ago I had the absolute displeasure where… a male streamer was caught publicly having paid for inappropriate AI content of me/others.” Her words reflected both anger and fatigue as similar controversies continue to surface. The Grok AI scandal involves functions that allowed users to mention the AI assistant on X and ask for image modifications, some of which were sexualized images of females inappropriately. The image-editing features were used not only for celebrities but also for ordinary citizens, as well as children, before stricter regulations were imposed by countries such as the UK, the EU, and Southeast Asia. This led xAI to restrict some image-editing functions for Grok for paid users only. Pokimane related this incident to her own experience in 2023, in which streamer Atrioc was called out for tasking deepfake content featuring her and other female streamers. This led to serious discussions on consent and responsible behavior in streaming platforms. Through this example, Pokimane emphasized how much has not changed in this community. She targeted neither Grok specifically nor the community that uses Grok but the culture that allows the existence of tools like that without proper protection. This has been echoed by some members, who claim that, in the development of AI, consent and protection should come before novelty. The importance of Pokimane’s words to the Grok AI controversy cannot be overstated. With her linkages to her own trauma experience, she was able to remind her fans that each time an abusive AI situation is reported, there are indeed victims involved. Thus, her words have served to remind AI developers of the need for boundaries in AI-generated content.
