NEW DELHI: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk is set to be discharged from hospital on Monday, sources said, a day after the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) called off its 36-day-long agitation at Jantar Mantar following the resignation of former Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan.Wangchuk had been admitted to hospital after his health deteriorated during the prolonged agitation, which demanded accountability over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and sweeping reforms in the examination system.The CJP announced the withdrawal of its protest in “good faith” after Pradhan stepped down from the Union council of ministers and the organisation received assurances from the Centre on its other demands.

Pradhan had resigned, saying he had submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the interest of students and to ensure that the ongoing protests were not exploited by “anti-national forces.”Following Pradhan’s resignation, President Droupadi Murmu assigned the additional charge of the ministry of education to Union minister Pralhad Joshi, who has since assumed office and begun reviewing the ministry’s functioning. The Centre has also moved to strengthen the examination system by proposing tougher anti-paper leak legislation and announcing a high-powered task force headed by technology expert Nandan Nilekani to recommend reforms aimed at making public examinations more transparent, secure and technology-driven.Wangchuk’s condition has improved and he has been cleared for discharge after responding well to treatment.
