Luigi Mangione appears in court, seeks key evidence including diary, gun tossed from state murder case

Luigi Mangione made a highly anticipated appearance in the court Monday as his attorneys have sought to have his diary entries and other key evidence tossed from his state murder case. His new photo, in which he was wearing a gray suit jacker over a white and red checkered shirt, went viral as the Manhattan court began a pretrial evidence hearing in the murder case of Brian Thompson. It is going to be almost a year since the sensational case that turned into an unprecedented hero-worshipping of Mangione who was arrested at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania following a days-long manhunt after United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, 50, was fatally shot December 4, 2024, on a busy sidewalk in midtown Manhattan.Mangione did not plead guilty and the Ivy League graduate soon caught the fancy of American youths who started lionizing Mangione. During the arrest, law enforcement recovered several pieces of evidence from Mangione’s backpack that authorities say tie him to the killing. But Mangione’s lawyers argued police illegally searched his bag without a warrant, so that evidence should be barred from the state’s case. Prosecutors denied the defense’s claims and agreed to a hearing on the matter. Apart from a handgun, a loaded magazine, the cops found a notebook with hadwritten entries. Magione’s team wants these to be not considered as evidence. Mangione’s defense is battling prosecutors in two cases: Lawyers in his federal death penalty case also are trying to get much of the same evidence tossed. That case returns to court on January 9.As Luigi’s news photo appeared on social media, users again started swooning over his good looks and how dapper and sharp he looked. His supporters were outside the court seeking ‘no death penalty’ for Mangione.
