Telling someone they ‘look good’ is considered a compliment, and when it’s said to someone older, it’s a pleasant gesture. King Charles, 77, however, doesn’t pretend that age is just a number. The monarch’s response after being told he ‘looks good’ cuts straight through the pleasantries.On 22 July, while attending the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Sandringham Flower Show, a well-wisher told him, “I’m the same age as you. You are looking good!” The monarch had a rather cheeky response. “It gets much harder, doesn’t it?” Hello! reported. Those words, delivered with perfect timing and a familiar smile, got a laugh from people who recognised them immediately as truth, not humility. He was simply stating a fact that only those past 70 already know.

King Charles’s comment wasn’t one of those carefully scripted remarks. It landed because it was honest in a way royal statements rarely are. Interestingly, this is not the first time he has spoken this way about ageing. He has made similar observations over the past couple of years. In September 2025, while visiting the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, he quipped about ageing. “This is the terrible thing, as I am discovering already. The bits don’t work so well when you get past 70,” he said. Last year, when asked about skiing, he admitted those days were squarely ‘behind him’. Similarly, in October 2024, when asked about his favourite sports, he shrugged and said he couldn’t do much any more, with too many injuries stacking up. “I can’t do much now, too many injuries,” King Charles said, as reported by Hello!

At a time when most people like to downplay the highs and lows of ageing, calling it just a number, King Charles is being realistic. He doesn’t mind talking about the gaps between what he wants to do and what his knees, his back and his energy levels will allow.

The timing of these jokes matters too. King Charles first announced his cancer diagnosis in early 2024. On 5 February, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles had been diagnosed with a form of cancer, discovered during treatment. The palace said the King “commenced a schedule of regular treatments”, and that during that period he would “postpone public-facing duties”.“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible,” the statement said. The statement also explained that the monarch had “chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer”. In December 2025, the palace announced that his treatment schedule would be reduced after he responded well to care. The King said, “thanks to early diagnosis, effective intervention, and adherence to ‘doctors’ orders’, my own schedule of cancer treatment can be reduced in the New Year.”“This milestone is both a personal blessing and a testament to the remarkable advances that have been made in cancer care in recent years, testament that I hope may give encouragement to the 50 per cent of us who will be diagnosed with the illness at some point in our lives,” the King added.The palace followed up with a statement saying King Charles “has responded exceptionally well to treatment, and his doctors advise that ongoing measures will now move into a precautionary phase. This position will be continuously monitored and reviewed to protect and prioritise his continued recovery.”Meanwhile, the RHS flower show marked the first official event of its kind at the Sandringham estate, and King Charles was there with Queen Camilla, working the crowd as he does at any public engagement. During that same walkabout, another well-wisher told him that he bore a striking resemblance to his late mother, Queen Elizabeth. “You look so much like your mum,” the well-wisher said.
