A powerful weather pattern known as an “omega block” is helping sustain the intense heatwave sweeping across Western Europe, where temperatures have soared above 40°C and dozens of heat-related deaths have been reported, according to a Reuters report.As per meteorologists, the phenomenon is responsible for trapping hot air over large parts of the continent, prolonging extreme temperatures and worsening drought conditions.Millions of people across France and other parts of Western Europe are enduring an intense heatwave that has, disrupted schools and transport services, and raised concerns about public health. French authorities have placed dozens of departments under the highest-level heat alert, warning that extreme conditions could persist for days and potentially break long-standing temperature records.
What is an omega block
An omega block is a large-scale atmospheric pattern named after the Greek letter Omega (Ω) because of its distinctive shape.The pattern forms when a dome of high pressure becomes trapped between two low-pressure systems. Under normal conditions, the jet stream — a fast-moving band of winds high in the atmosphere — steers weather systems from west to east. During an omega block, however, the jet stream becomes distorted, creating a stable configuration that prevents weather systems from moving. As a result, the high-pressure zone remains locked in place, often for several days or even weeks.
Why does it cause heatwave
The central high-pressure system acts like a lid on the atmosphere.It suppresses cloud formation, leading to clear skies and uninterrupted sunshine. With little cloud cover and weak winds, heat accumulates near the surface day after day, causing temperatures to rise sharply.This is exactly what is happening across parts of France, Spain and other regions of Western Europe, where temperatures have exceeded 40°C.Meanwhile, the low-pressure systems on either side of the omega block often bring cooler and wetter weather to neighbouring regions, creating stark contrasts in conditions across relatively short distances.
For how long can it last
Omega blocks typically persist for three to ten days, but in some cases they can remain in place for several weeks.Because the weather pattern moves very slowly, affected regions can experience prolonged periods of extreme heat, drought or, depending on the season, cold spells.
