Dubai Metro mega-expansion 2026: Burj Khalifa Station to get massive 65% capacity boost

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in partnership with Emaar Properties, has officially launched a major upgrade of the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station, one of the busiest and most strategic stops on the city’s metro network. The decision comes after years of rising passenger demand, especially during peak travel periods such as New Year’s Eve, public holidays and national celebrations, times when the station often reaches peak capacity.Officials say this expansion isn’t just about more space, it’s a necessary improvement to keep up with long-term city growth and tourism trends through 2040.

Station expansion details

The core goal of this project is to eliminate bottlenecks during peak times, especially the massive crowds seen on New Year’s Eve, during Eid, and throughout the shopping festivals. Below is a breakdown of how the station is changing:

Feature Current Capacity New Upgraded Capacity Total Change
Total Station Area 6,700 sq. metres 8,500 sq. metres +27% Space
Hourly Passenger Flow 7,250 passengers 12,320 passengers +65% Boost
Daily Handling Capacity ~58,000 (Average) Up to 220,000 Massive Growth

To support this growth, the project will:

  • Expand concourse and platform areas.
  • Add new escalators and elevators.
  • Separate entry and exit gates to improve passenger flow. Increase the number of fare gates.
  • Enhance pedestrian bridges and station entrances. Expansion of commercial areas for a better commuter experience.
  • Improve connections with other public transport and mobility options.

These changes are designed to make transit smoother, safer and more comfortable for everyday users and visitors alike.

Why is it important?

Located near icons like the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, this station serves as a gateway for both residents and tourists.According to RTA figures, ridership has steadily increased over the past decade:

  • From 6.13M in 2013 to more than 10.57M passengers in 2024.
  • Daily averages now regularly exceed 56,000 passengers.
  • Ridership has grown approximately 7.5% annually over five years.

This growth reflects Dubai’s rising popularity as a global destination and the city’s expanding population, both of which put extra pressure on transport infrastructure.RTA Director General His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer said the project reflects the vision to build infrastructure that keeps pace with urban growth, supports major events, and enhances overall mobility. For the average commuter, this means shorter wait times and less shoulder-to-shoulder crowding during rush hour. For tourists, it means a more welcoming and efficient arrival at the Burj Khalifa. Ultimately, the upgrade solidifies Downtown Dubai as a globally connected district where mobility is as world-class as the architecture.
