As the much-awaited festival of Diwali draws near, Indian curriculum schools across the UAE have declared a long four-day break from Friday, October 17, to Monday, October 20, 2025. This thoughtfully planned holiday period, which falls alongside the weekend, offers families the perfect opportunity to travel, visit temples, and celebrate the Festival of Lights together. Schools like Our Own Indian School in Dubai have officially communicated the closure, extending warm Diwali wishes to their community, while classes are set to resume from Tuesday, October 21. The school issued an official circular stating, “On behalf of the entire OIS family, I extend warm wishes to you and your loved ones for a Happy Diwali. Please note that the school will remain closed on Friday, October 17, 2025, and Monday, October 20, 2025, on the occasion of Diwali. Regular school working hours will resume from Tuesday, October 21, 2025.”Many other Indian schools in the Emirates are expected to follow suit, aligning with the spirit of the season and community sentiments. Parents and students have welcomed this move, viewing it as an ideal chance for cultural engagement and family bonding before the academic term continues. Diwali celebrations in UAE schools are much more than just a holiday. Schools actively involve students in enriching cultural activities to deepen their understanding of the festival’s significance. Children enjoy vibrant dance performances, skits, and sing traditional songs, often dressed in colourful ethnic wear. Creative workshops like rangoli and diya decoration, along with storytelling sessions, bring alive the theme of light triumphing over darkness. Special assemblies highlight the cultural heritage behind the festivities, encouraging appreciation and inclusivity among the diverse student population. During the break, families typically gather for prayers, share sweets, light lamps, and embrace the joy that Diwali brings.

Diwali festivities and events across the UAE

The UAE lights up with a plethora of Diwali events every year, showcasing its multicultural essence. In Abu Dhabi, the BAPS Hindu Mandir becomes a hub of activity with special prayers and cultural programs running for over a week, culminating on Diwali day, October 20. Dubai’s Al Seef district and Global Village host sparkling fireworks, cultural performances, vibrant markets, and traditional music and dance shows that attract crowds from across the region. The fireworks show kicks off on the evening of October 17 at 9:00 PM at Al Seef, a scenic waterfront area along Dubai Creek. Following this, four more grand displays are scheduled at Global Village on October 18, 19, 24, and 25, each starting at 9:00 PM. Alongside the fireworks, Al Seef will host the Noor Festival of Lights from October 17 to 19, featuring cultural showcases, music, dance, and workshops.Shopping malls and Indian restaurants offer attractive Diwali-themed promotions and festive menus, enhancing the celebratory mood. Not to be missed are family entertainment shows such as Disney on Ice and exhibitions at Abu Dhabi’s Louvre, adding a magical touch to the season’s festivities. In 2025, Diwali falls on October 20, with festivities beginning on October 18 with Dhanteras and continuing for five days:

  • October 18 – Dhanteras: A day considered auspicious for buying gold, gadgets, cars, or even new homes. Homes are cleaned and prepared for the festival ahead.
  • October 19 – Chhoti Diwali: The ‘small Diwali’ is about preparing sweets, exchanging gifts, and setting the tone for the main day.
  • October 20 – Diwali (Main Day): The central celebration involves lighting diyas (earthen lamps), wearing new clothes, offering prayers to Goddess Lakshmi, and in some traditions, commemorating the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya.
  • October 21 – Govardhan Puja: A ritualistic day linked with the end of the harvest season in parts of India.
  • October 22 – Bhai Dooj: A day celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters, marked by traditional rituals and gift exchanges.

With schools granting well-deserved breaks and cities pulsing with festive energy, the UAE is all set to celebrate Diwali 2025 in grand style, creating lasting memories for families and communities alike. Go to Source
