Buried for 1.8 million years: This ancient elephant tooth was finally found by an 11-year-old on a UK beach

PC: New York Post

A routine family outing along the Suffolk coast turned into an unexpected encounter with Britain’s distant prehistoric past when an 11-year-old boy noticed an unusual object lying close to the water’s edge. At first glance, it looked a little different from the countless stones scattered across the shoreline, yet its shape suggested it was something else entirely. The discovery has since been identified as the fossilised tooth of an elephant relative that disappeared from Europe long before modern humans existed. Findings of this kind are uncommon, though the coastline where it emerged has long been recognised for revealing traces of ancient life as erosion steadily exposes material buried beneath the cliffs. The discovery has attracted attention not only because of the fossil’s remarkable age but also because it was spotted by a child who had been talking about elephants only moments earlier.

How an unusual elephant tooth caught a young boy’s attention

Charlie Orchard-Lisle was spending time with his family at East Lane beach in the village of Bawdsey, Suffolk, when he noticed an oddly shaped object resting beside the incoming waves. It stood out enough for both Charlie and his mother, Eleanor, to pause for a closer look. Despite being worn out with age, the artefact seemed to be distinguishable from other stones. Instead of writing off the item as yet another rock, the family chose to keep it, feeling that it could be something special. As it turned out, they were right about that since specialists studied the fossil and found out that it is actually an elephant tooth that survived almost two million years. It was discovered that the fossil is an upper left molar that belonged to an extinct type of elephant known as Anancus avernensis. According to the New York Post, it was Professor Adrian Lister, a paleontologist at London’s Natural History Museum, who verified this discovery. The molar has a size of around four inches and still keeps the majority of its enamel due to spending so many years buried in sediments. With the passage of thousands of years, minerals have substituted parts of the original material, thus turning the tooth into a fossil.

Why fossils keep appearing along this stretch of coastline

The Suffolk shoreline has earned a reputation among fossil enthusiasts because of the Red Crag Formation, a series of ancient marine deposits exposed along sections of England’s east coast. These sediments contain the remains of animals that lived millions of years ago, making the area one of Britain’s most productive fossil locations.Natural erosion plays an important role. Wind, rain and the constant movement of the sea gradually wear away the cliffs, releasing fossils that have remained hidden underground for vast periods. Once freed, waves can carry them onto nearby beaches, where careful observers occasionally spot them before tides move them elsewhere.

Surprising story behind the 1.8-million-year-old elephant tooth

The timing of the discovery added another layer to the story. According to Charlie’s mother, the family had been chatting during their walk, and her son had mentioned how much he liked elephants only a short time before finding the fossil.Within minutes, the conversation shifted from living animals to one that had roamed Europe nearly 1.8 million years ago. While the coincidence surprised the family, the find itself was the result of careful observation rather than planned fossil hunting. Go to Source
