Abu Dhabi distance learning rules 2026: Authorities mandates live classes and strict attendance tracking

The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge has introduced stricter distance learning rules across Abu Dhabi, making live online classes and mandatory attendance tracking compulsory for all schools.ADEK said the updated framework is designed to align remote education with in-person classroom standards, ensuring consistent teaching quality, student discipline and academic outcomes across the emirate.

Abu Dhabi’s online class attendance rules

Under the new framework, student attendance during online classes is no longer flexible and must be formally recorded, just like physical classroom attendance.Schools are now required to:

  • Track attendance for every scheduled online session
  • Ensure students are present and actively participating
  • Follow up with absentees and maintain proper records

Students are expected to:

  • Log in on time for all scheduled classes
  • Keep cameras on where required
  • Engage with teachers during lessons

This move ensures that distance learning receives the same seriousness as classroom teaching, reducing passive or irregular participation.

Live classes mandatory

A major highlight of the updated rules is the requirement for live, real-time teaching to be the primary mode of instruction.ADEK has directed schools to prioritise interactive live classes where students can engage directly with teachers, ask questions and receive immediate feedback. This approach aims to improve understanding and keep students actively involved.Recorded lessons are still allowed, but only as supplementary material. They cannot replace live teaching, marking a clear shift away from passive learning methods used earlier.

School responsibilities under ADEK rules

The new framework places stronger accountability on schools and teachers to ensure high-quality online education.Schools must implement structured schedules, monitor lesson delivery and ensure teaching remains interactive and effective. At the same time, teachers are expected to conduct engaging sessions, assess student progress regularly and provide continuous feedback.ADEK has also highlighted the importance of maintaining a balanced learning environment, including managing screen time and supporting student wellbeing.

Abu Dhabi digital learning strategy 2026

The tighter regulations reflect Abu Dhabi’s broader push to establish a long-term, structured digital education model rather than relying on temporary remote learning solutions.According to ADEK, the updated rules aim to improve learning outcomes, strengthen student participation and ensure that distance education meets the same standards as classroom teaching. The move signals a more disciplined and regulated approach to online schooling in Abu Dhabi, with clear expectations for both students and educators.
