Wankhede sues Aryan Khan's show for defamation

NEW DELHI: IRS officer and former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) zonal director Sameer Wankhede has filed a defamation suit in Delhi high court against the makers of the Netflix drama series ‘The Ba***ds of Bollywood’.The suit filed on Thursday seeks an injunction and Rs 2 crore in damages for misleading and negative portrayal of anti-drug enforcement agencies and maligning his reputation. The series, directed by Aryan Khan, son of actor Shah Rukh Khan, was released on Sept 18. Wankhede is known for arresting Aryan Khan in a drug case in 2021.Series aimed at damaging his reputation, says Wankhede In his plea, Sameer Wankhede has raised objections to a scene in the series where a character makes an obscene gesture after saying “Satyamev Jayate”, which is a part of the national emblem. He argued this was a “grave” violation of the provisions of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. He claimed the series presents anti-drug enforcement agencies in a misleading and negative light and erodes public confidence in law enforcement institutions.The plea also alleges that the series was produced with the intent to damage his reputation. Wankhede also objected to references made in the series to Aryan’s NCB case, highlighting that the case remains sub judice before the Bombay high court and the special court dealing with NDPS cases in Mumbai. The suit names as defendants the production company Red Chillies Entertainment, Netflix, X Corp, Google LLC, Meta Platforms Inc., RPG Lifestyle Media Pvt Ltd.
