‘Not that kind of man’: Family of Delhi blast suspect recalls his love for home; probe says he drove car that exploded

NEW DELHI: The family members of Dr Umar Nabi, the key suspect in the Delhi blasts, have expressed their disbelief that he could have a role in the incident that killed 12 people and injured many on Monday.Preliminary findings in the Red Fort blast have found that Dr Umar Nabi, a medical professional from Lethpora in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, was driving the Hyundai i20 that exploded near a traffic signal outside Red Fort. Muzamila, the sister-in-law of Dr Umar Un Nabi said he wasn’t the type of person to carry out such an attack. “He wasn’t that kind of man,” she told news agency ANI.She said security forces asked about Umar’s whereabouts, and they told them he was in Delhi. According to her, Umar had not been home for the last two months, and he did not have many friends.Muzamila said that Umar was very attached to the family and was about to get married. “He was very attached to my children and loved them a lot. Whenever he visited home, he used to be busy with Cricket. He loved Cricket,” she said, adding, “He was engaged, but he was not married yet.”She further recalled, “We faced a lot of struggles to get him educated. We worked hard so that he could stand on his own two feet and take care of us. I cannot believe all this.” Umar, also connected to Al Falah University, is believed to have died in the blast. Officials suspect that Umar carried out the explosion after learning that several of his associates, including Shaheen had been detained.Jammu and Kashmir police have taken DNA samples from Umar’s mother to match the remains recovered from the blast site.
