US Budget 2027: Trump seeks record $1.5tn defence push amid Iran war

US President Donald Trump has proposed a $1.5 trillion defence budget for 2027, the largest in decades, underscoring a sharp focus on military spending amid the ongoing US-led war against Iran. The proposal, released on Friday, outlines a significant increase in Pentagon funding while calling for a 10% reduction in non-defence spending by shifting certain responsibilities to state and local governments, reported AP. “President Trump is committed to rebuilding our military to secure peace through strength,” the budget document stated.

Defence first, domestic cuts

The administration plans to allocate about $1.1 trillion for defence through the regular appropriations process, with an additional $350 billion expected via budget reconciliation, a route that allows Republicans to pass measures without Democratic support. The budget reflects Trump’s prioritisation of military spending, which he reiterated ahead of a national address on the Iran conflict.“We’re fighting wars. We can’t take care of day care,” Trump said at a private White House event. “It’s not possible for us to take care of day care, Medicaid, Medicare, all these individual things,” he added, suggesting such responsibilities be handled at the state level.

Key spending priorities

Beyond defence, the budget outlines several targeted allocations:

  • Maintaining funding for immigration enforcement and deportation operations, including expanded detention capacity
  • A 13% increase for the department of justice, focused on tackling violent crime
  • $481 million to boost aviation safety and hire more air traffic controllers
  • A $10 billion fund for national park service projects in Washington, DC

The plan also eliminates refugee resettlement assistance programmes while continuing funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Fiscal pressures and political hurdles

The proposal comes as the US faces nearly $2 trillion in annual deficits and a national debt exceeding $39 trillion. A large share of federal spending continues to be driven by entitlement programmes such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. However, the president’s budget serves only as a policy blueprint and does not carry the force of law. Congress, which controls federal spending, can modify or reject it.Prepared by budget director Russ Vought, the document is intended to guide lawmakers as they draft appropriations bills. The administration is relying on Republican majorities to push through key priorities, particularly defence spending.

Standoff over current spending

The budget proposal comes amid an ongoing impasse in Congress over current-year funding, especially for the department of homeland security (DHS). Lawmakers remain divided over immigration policies, with Democrats seeking changes that Republicans oppose.Trump said he would sign an executive order to ensure DHS employees are paid during the prolonged partial government shutdown, which has stretched to 49 days.

Continuity with earlier agenda

The 2027 budget builds on Trump’s earlier push to reduce the size of the federal government, including efforts linked to cost-cutting initiatives. However, Congress has previously resisted steep cuts to domestic programmes, keeping spending levels relatively stable in several areas. Go to Source
