Mehul Choksi fails to get relief from Belgium court

NEW DELHI: Clearing one of the last hurdles for fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi’s return to India, Belgium’s Supreme Court on Tuesday is learnt to have dismissed his appeal challenging the order to extradite him to India. This came after Choksi, accused in bank fraud cases to the tune of Rs 13,000 crore, filed a petition in the Belgian top court appealing the extradition order of Oct. The top court in Brussels upheld the decision of an Antwerp court of appeals, which had rejected the fugitive’s contention of being tortured in jail if he was extradited to India. Choksi was arrested in Antwerp in April this year at the request of Indian law enforcement agencies.
