Vir blames STAR EGOS for not having Conan-style hosting in India

Vir Das blames 'STAR EGOS' for not having Conan O'Brien-style hosting in Indian film awards

In a thought-provoking post-Oscars discussion, Vir Das raised eyebrows about India’s absence of a ‘Conan-style’ approach to hosting award shows. He noted that the presence of ‘star egos’ stifles comedians’ ability to deliver roasts, leading to a humorless atmosphere. Having previously penned scripts for Indian ceremonies, Das believes that such dynamics drain the authenticity of comedy for viewers. Read on to know more in detail.

After the Oscars 2026 ceremony, actor-comedian Vir Das took to his Instagram, questioning why such award functions don’t take place in India. In his post, the actor also shared the reason behind the same. He revealed that “star egos” often stand in the way of making such award nights possible.

Vir Das questions why India cannot have ‘Conan-style’ hosting

Vir Das took to his Instagram to question why “Conan-style” hosting doesn’t take place at award shows in India. He wrote, “Why doesn’t India do a Gervais or even a Conan-style hosting of a major film awards? Well, as someone who wrote the script for many Indian awards for five years.”He added, “Here’s why. The point of having comedians host and roast the Oscars or film awards is that for a night, a jester would humanise the most beautiful chosen people in the world, since they were being celebrated already. That’s when any joke is a punch-up.” He further expressed, “Here, star egos won’t take a joke from anyone not at their level. Ironically, the bigger the star who hosts, the trickier it’s gonna be. Because like three people are at that level. So, a huge star hosting works for the people in the room, just not always funny for the people watching. Simply because the power imbalance is off.”

Vir Das’ projects

On the work front, the actor was last seen in the film ‘Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos’. The film backed by Aamir Khan was directed by Vir Das. The film featured Vir in the lead role along with Mithila Palkar, Mona Singh, Sharib Hashmi, and Srushti Tawade. The film featured special appearances by Aamir Khan and Imran Khan.
