Not Vijay! THIS Tamil actor used ‘Ilaya Thalapathy’ first

Not Vijay but THIS Tamil actor was the original ‘Ilaya Thalapathy’ long before 'Mersal' star; all about Salem event

CM Vijay is known across the world as “Thalapathy.” The title has become a defining part of his film career and political image. What began as a screen prefix in the 1990s eventually turned into one of the most powerful brands in Indian cinema. But long before Vijay adopted “Ilaya Thalapathy,” another Tamil actor was already using the title.

Saravanan was the original ‘Ilaya Thalapathy’

Reportedly, Saravanan used the title “Ilaya Thalapathy” before Vijay entered the industry with the now-iconic prefix. As reported by India Glitz in an interview, Saravanan recalled that the title was given to him in the 1990s by veteran DMK leader Veerapandi S. Arumugam. The honor was reportedly bestowed during a gathering in Salem. Saravanan’s name appeared with the title in films such as ‘Nallathe Nadakkum’ and ‘Sundaram Plus 2’.

Vijay adopted the title in ‘Rasigan’

Vijay first appeared as “Ilaya Thalapathy” in ‘Rasigan,’ which was directed by his father, S. A. Chandrasekhar. As his popularity soared, the prefix “Ilaya” was eventually removed, leaving him with the singular title “Thalapathy.” That shortened version gained further prominence in films such as Atlee’s ‘Mersal’.

Saravanan stepped aside gracefully

As Vijay’s connection with the title strengthened, Saravanan gradually stopped using it. Reports say he even discussed the matter with S. A. Chandrasekhar. The director reportedly told him that he could continue using the title if he remained active as a lead actor. Saravanan later chose to move on, allowing the title to become firmly identified with Vijay.Born on October 10, 1966, Saravanan made his acting debut with ‘Vaidhehi Vanthachu’. After a long hiatus in cinema he returned with a memorable performance in ‘Paruthiveeran’ alongside Karthi and Priyamani. Saravanan has remained active in Tamil cinema through strong supporting roles in films such as Rajinikanth’s ‘Jailer’ and Dhanush’s ‘Raayan’. He also directed the film named ‘Thaayumaanavan’.
