Anurag Kashyap faces criminal case in anti-Brahmin post row

Anurag Kashyap faces non-bailable warrant after Surat court rules on controversial 'Anti-Brahmin' post on Twitter

A Gujarat court has ordered the registration of a criminal case against filmmaker Anurag Kashyap following his controversial social media remarks about the Brahmin community. The Surat court partly allowed a private complaint filed by a VHP leader and lawyer, finding sufficient reason to believe the posts could promote enmity between communities.

Gujarat court directs registering a case against Anurag Kashyap over his remarks about the Brahmin community

According to the PTI report, the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) A S Jani directed that a criminal case be registered against Hindi filmmaker Anurag Kashyap under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 196 (promoting enmity between different groups), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of public peace), and 353(2) (circulating false information). The court noted there was reason to believe the social media post was made viral by the accused in a way that defames a certain community.

About the complaint against Anurag Kashyap

The complaint was filed by lawyer and Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Kamlesh Raval, who hails from the Brahmin community. He moved the court over Kashyap’s posts on X, which he alleged were made in reaction to protests against the trailer of the Hindi film ‘Phule’ on April 16 last year. According to the complaint, when the All India Brahman Samaj objected to the trailer release, Kashyap posted remarks denigrating the Brahmin community and continued to do so in replies to those who objected. The complainant stated, “The entire Brahmin community has opposed the post of the accused. Such a post poses a danger of spreading enmity between communities and different castes. The accused is in the business of making Indian films and is also an actor. From young children to old people, everyone watches movies and tries to imitate actors.”The complaint also referenced an earlier post by Kashyap from January 8, 2020, in which he allegedly made objectionable remarks about Hindus and accused the Union government of being “casteist” and having a “criminal mentality.”

A non-bailable warrant has already been issued against Anurag Kashyap

Raval stated that several summons were sent to Kashyap, but he failed to respond to any of them. The court subsequently issued a non-bailable warrant against him. Anurag Kashyap has not yet issued a public statement in response to the court’s order.Disclaimer: The information in this report is based on a legal hearing as reported by a third-party source.
