Martin Short recalls meeting his ex-girlfriend and actress, Gilda Radner: ‘She was instantly funny’

Martin Short, the distinguished actor renowned for his roles in ‘Three Amigos!’ and ‘Only Murders in the Building,’ recalled meeting his hilarious and warm ex-girlfriend, Gilda Radner. Refreshing the memories, the actor-comedian shared that every girl wanted to be her best friend and every guy wanted to date her because of her infectious personality.

Reminiscing about his days when he was just out of school, Short remembered meeting Radner in the 1972 production. “‘Godspell’ had opened off-Broadway and become a huge hit, so they were mounting a Toronto production,” Short said at ‘Netflix Is a Joke Presents: This Better Be Funny with David Letterman,’ before adding, “I was still in university. Gilda Radner was there. Eugene Levy. Andrea Martin. Victor Garber.” Reflecting on his journey, Short mentioned that the callbacks were chaos amongst the hundreds.

Highlighting Radner, who passed away in 1989 due to ovarian cancer, the late ‘Saturday Night Live’ star claimed that she was funny, alive, and warm. “The first rehearsal, she came over and said, ‘Hi, I’m Gilda. I’m really excited to meet you.’ She was instantly funny,” he said. Meanwhile, he also met his then-future wife, Nancy Dolman, who was the understudy of Radner. “She was an incredible singer. Huge talent,” the ‘Father of the Bride’ star added.

Meanwhile, taking an intimate look at the actor’s life, Martin Short recently opened up about his family and the dreadful incident. Mentioning the profound grief, the 76-year-old shared that the death of his daughter, Katherine Short, due to suicide, has been a nightmare. “And my daughter fought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, other things, and did the best she could, until she couldn’t,” he said during his appearance on CBS’s Sunday Mornings about Katherine, who passed away in February.
